Passing and ReceivingAREASOFEMPHASISGUIDELINES FOR COACHESRecommendations For TheNational Systems• Build the player’s individual offensivebase from an established “readyposition” or “triple threat position”.• Coach the value of passing principlesand the techniques in game likesituations.• Power and accuracy in passing comefrom the player’s stance, the handpositioning and the stepping/ pivotingto pass, culminating with a wrist rotationand snap. This collectively becomes theplayers “passing technique”.• Similarly, moving to catch the ballincludes the stop, balance, handposition and the gather to a triple threatposition for preparation to shoot, dribble or pass. This sequence iscollectively the new definition of better“receiving technique”.• Re-emphasise running, stopping andpivoting to catch; making this a focus forcoaching detail. This catching areaneeds to come under much closerscrutiny when coaching our youthplayers.• Coach the detail of footwork for thelead. The running stopping footwork, particularly the stride stop, combinedwith the forward or reverse pivot aftercatch and into the triple threat position isthe key footwork sequence to bemastered by players who start tospecialise in basketball.• Observe and encourage improvementto passing technique in all combinationsor drilling situations.• Check and correct the hand position asa key part of passing and catchingtechnique.• Encourage accuracy of every pass, tohit the exact target - “on time, on target”.This is where the receiving player canbest use the pass against the position ofthe defence. More attention to thequality of the pass in hitting an exacttarget. Ensure players pass out ofstance. The ability to pivot, step andpass while protecting the ball is a keyaspect of passing. Once technique hasbeen acquired and developed it needsto be extended into the game likesituations. Therefore passing against adefender (constrained or otherwise) isvery important to progress the skill.Emphasise the detail of stepping topass or pivoting to pass. Understandthat full court fast break offense isdependent on vision (head up) and theability to make the “man ahead” passrather than dribble the ball by a quickplayer full court.• In this regard re-emphasise the use ofand the player’s ability to throw thebaseball pass for distance in full courtsituations.• Teach players how to move the defencewith fakes. The fake is an importantprinciple against defensive pressure; thetechniques must be developed to movethe defence.• Establish a "four out one in" offensiveteam balance to allow for post passing, and to change the angles of our gamefrom a five out offense dribble drivementality. Better spacing for passingback cutting or leading effectively.91
