Athletic DevelopmentAREASOFEMPHASISGUIDELINES FOR COACHESRecommendations For TheNational System• Establish a national information systemto include Information regardingathletic development and assessmentfor coaches, performance specialistsand medical staff. It must be accessible,updated and taught.• Conducting research to:– Determine the appropriate levels oftraining for different ages andabilities, rather than relying on thetraditional views.– Determine appropriate fitness testingprocedures for basketball.– Highlight key injury patterns andpossible prevention strategies.– Highlight key performance factorsand developmental programs toimprove any common or individualareas for development.• Develop a physical testing strategy withnationally accepted protocols for club,regional and national squads. Accept along term view to utilise this informationto establish some standard of “BritishBasketball” norms which will helpplayers and coaches focus training andbe aware of required levels to progressthrough player pathways.• Develop a system of player profiling:this will underpin all guidelines anddevelop players performancerecommendations.Recommendation To Clubs• Club and national team coaches mustendeavour to work together for thegood of the athletes and provideconsistent teaching.• Clubs at the various levels shouldreview their practices and programswith regard to the athletic development,preparation and education of theirplayers.• Annual plans should focus on thephysical workload that will underpin theprogram. Periodisation and phasingbecome critical elements of seasonaland annual planning, especially if youwant to be peaking at the end of thecycle.• All national league clubs shouldperiodise their program and plan forthe physical conditioning needs for theirplayer to perform. The older ageprograms will need a moreconsideration.• Education sessions on nutrition, exerciseand recovery are a must for the longterm operation of all our clubs. Givingall players the tools for health andmaximum performance is the least wecan provide for club level players.• Clubs should also seek voluntary helpfrom schools and universities fromqualified professionals to assist andadvise.• Clubs who conduct yearly programsshould periodise their plans andprepare a meaningful phasing ofpreseason, in season, and off seasonwork. The monitoring of recovery time isalso needed.31
