A surgicaltechnologist assists the surgeon in the operating room by preparing the operating room for the surgical procedure; preparing all sterile areas, supplies andinstruments for use; assisting with sterile draping, gowning and gloving; and handing appropriate sterile instruments and supplies to the surgeon’s assistantand/or surgeon during invasive surgical procedures. In addition to a hospital operating room, the surgical technologist may work in a surgeon's private office,a surgical outpatient facility, a central processing department, and possibly in an emergency room and obstetrical delivery room. The surgical technologistmay become certified through successful completion of a national exam offered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting, andthus become Nationally Board Certified, with rights and privileges to use the CST© credential behind his or her name.Surgical Technology is a selective admission program.
