ORAL ABSTRACTS - THURSDAY, 21 MAY 2015female health care workers who participated in either football or zumba will be presented. Theresults of these studies indicate that football training is a flow eliciting activity also for previouslyinactive participants and that flow experiences are related to the adherence to regular physicalactivity following an intervention.S13.2Football on prescription? Football's potential for exercise adherencePeter Elsborg, J Wikman, G NielsenCenter for Team Sport and Health, NEXS, University of Copenhagen, DenmarkObjective: To explore the potentials of football and other team sports regarding motivation for andadherence to exercise. Methods: A qualitative focus group study of middle-aged and elderly men who participated inexercise interventions involving playing either a ballgame (football) or a more individually focusedexercise (spinning and crossfit). A quasi experimental study on differences in intrinsic motivation, flow experiences and exercise continuation among menopausal women doing either individualexercise (spinning) or playing a ballgame (floorball). Results: The qualitative study shows how different social, organizational and material structuresinherent in the different activities shape the subjects’ enjoyment of exercise participation, as well astheir intention and ability to continue being active. It points to the conclusion that, football as ateam sport activity is more intrinsically motivating for the participants through positive socialinteraction and play. It also indicates that in spite of some strong organizational barriers to elderlypeople football is more likely to result in exercise continuation than activities that rely primarily onextrinsic motivation such as the expectation of improved health and well-being. These findings aresupported by results from a quasi-experimental study where women playing a ballgame instead ofconventional individual exercise in a group/class developed higher levels of intrinsic motivation forthe activity, higher levels of flow and the participants enjoyed the activity more.S13.3An investigation in the characteristics of mental health in athletes with a special focus onfootball playersFrank Weiland, K SiefkenMedical School Hamburg (MSH), Department of Mental Health, Hamburg, GermanyBackground: Research indicates that sport can enhance mental health.
