9. Conclusion
With meteorological data and marine data recorded for a period of 3.5 years, the
meteorological aspects as well as the marine aspects of the Horns Rev site, are very well
documented. In addition, the data coverage of the meteorological measurements is more
than 99%; using the back-up system it would be possible to establish a data set with
100% coverage. The report describes the three individual meteorological systems -
main, back-up and sonic system - in detail. The measuring programme investigated the
directional sensitivity for wake effects, as well as the affect of speed-up and wake effect
on mast effects.
The report evaluates the main statistical values to give an overview of the wind records
compiled from May 1999 to November 2002. The statistics include the distribution of
wind speed, wind direction and turbulence.
More than 8900 hours of 20 Hz 3D-sonic measurements are available for the site. The
sonic data are stored in a common file format in the Database on Wind Characteristics.
The sonic data shown and evaluated in this report are based on statistical figures.
Different methods have been applied to produce long-term predictions of the wind
resources. The purpose of using different methods is that each methodology has
different strengths and weaknesses. The wind resources estimated in this report are
compared with previous estimates, and good agreement is seen. The report also
evaluates the atmospheric stability, the shear exponent distribution and the distribution
of gusts.
Wave action has been measured simultaneously with the meteorological aspects of the
site; the coverage exceeds 80% for wave height data and 60% for current data. The
report presents statistical values and distribution plots. For further analysis, numerical
simulations have been performed to establish estimates of the long-term extremes of
waves, current and water level.
During the measuring period, the site encountered an extreme hurricane, which is also
described. The hurricane hit the Horns Rev site on December 3, 1999 and exhibited
extremely fierce gusts with maximum 1 Hz values of 58.5 m/s at 18.00 hours.
Finally, the report discusses uncertainties related to both meteorological and marine data
as well as data treatment.
