Sarah HickeyGUEST (QLD)I love painting“women. Womenwho residein glittering, exotic worlds ofornamentationand beauty. Some are accompanied byowls and assorted avian, others are paired with themore risky of the animalkingdom. Hair-filled andfur laden, these womenfeel like playful versions ofself; avatars and adornedcompanions I’m yet tomeet. I like the celebrationof all that is fantasticallyfeminine; the frilly bitsthat we were told not tolike in an earlier versionof feminism. I am drawnto all that accompaniesand surrounds femininemythology. I believe theact of creating art feelslike a conversation withspirit, a deeper energyof understanding. We aremore than this physicalflesh and bone. Perhapsmy fascination with allthat is beautiful, adorned, and embellished is areflection of who I believewe are on the inside.‘We are ourselves worksof art, and as we workto bring forward the artwithin us, we express ourinner divinity’.Julia CameronCharlotte pondered the family treeOil and mixed media on canvas, 140 x 100cm, 2011, $3100After completing bachelor degrees in fine arts and education, andthen 5 years of teaching art in Queensland High Schools, Sarahstarted to produce art professionally after a long hiatus from herown creative practice.
