Hartmut VeitCITY OF HOBSONS BAYUntitledPine needle brushes displayed in freestanding vitrine (vitrine 105 x 90 x 60cm), 2011$1500My work explores issues of“perception, and the oftenmore illusory aspects ofhuman experience. My artis historically linked tosurrealism, and the searchfor a different level ofperception (which bypassedobservation and analysis) and for therecognition of a more direct sensoryengagement to our environment. Mystudio work acknowledges the widerperceptual possibilities for intuitiveinsight and interaction, evidencedin the shamanic tradition and themany dimensions of this which arefundamental to modern religious beliefand integral to an ongoing tribalunderstanding of the world.Hartmut is in the process of making a career changefrom Graphic Design to Fine Art and commencedhis Masters of Visual Art at Monash in 2011. Hisartistic practice is shaped by his German culturalheritage and childhood experiences of growing upin remote rural areas in the Highlands of PapuaNew Guinea and the Rocky Mountains of Canada, contrasted against subsequent experiences ofurban living in highly industrialized societies inGermany and now Australia. Interrogations intoanthropology, ecology and sustainability, theactivity of collecting, the role of artifacts, and themuseum as medium are important aspects of hispractice. He lived in Williamstown for 10 years andhas strong connections to the community havingserved on council committees for Urban Planning& Development, among others. The pine needlesfor the works exhibited were collected fromthe pine trees growing on the foreshore in theWilliamstown Botanic gardens precinct.URBAN CREATURES 51
