Maria SimonelliCITY OF PORT PHILLIPMy TribeWax and fabric48 x 36 x 20cm, 2012$660 eachThis work came from a similar“piece called Hoody, which,although deliberately ambiguousin its title, appeared to evokeunintentional emotions ofgangs and secrecy. My tribe,is a small story of people andinter-relationships that reflects currentissues relating to separation, supportand protection. Are the hoodies designedto hide our body form or do they reflecttribal messages and rites of passage? Whileassembling the pieces I became aware ofthe silent connection between the individualfigures and their unique personalities. Arethey as one, a unit with the same collectiveambitions or are those figures in thebackground vying for the top position…hisright hand man or just after his job?Maria lives in South Melbourne and has astrong association with local council havingserved as a community representative on theSustainable Environment Forum (AdvisoryCommittee) and the Community GrantsAssessment Panel over the past 10 years. Thislocal community experience has informed herart practice. She has created art all her lifeand has just completed a Graduate Certificatein Visual Art at VCA, Melbourne University.This allowed her to explore sculpture asa medium and the broader expression ofmeaning and ideas in contemporary art.She is interested in creating and connectingfigurative forms and exploring how they canbe a vehicle to express and interpret emotionand relationships. Since then has continued toexhibit in solo and group shows, progressively developing his practice and pursuing his career as a professionalartist.
