Claire ANNA WatsonGUEST (VIC)Untitled #1, Tree Study #1 SeriesType C Print, metallic paper (Edition 1 of 6), 91 x 122cm, 2010, $2240During an arts residency“in Portugal in the regionknown as Alentejo, Ifixed strawberries onto a native tree so thatthey appeared to be in asomewhat natural setting.The distortion was subtlein its manipulation of the naturalworld. Only natural media wasincorporated. The work was intendedto spark a series of questions in theviewer such as: What do we knowabout the food that we eat? Howis it produced? Where has it comefrom? By re-contextualising food inthis way I was hoping to reawakenthe viewer’s relationship with theworld around them.Claire is a Melbourne based artist working acrossmedia from ephemeral installations, photographyand video-based work, through to public art. Sheholds a Graduate Certificate in Public Art from RMITUniversity and last year completed her Masters ofFine Art at Monash University. She has presentedher works nationally and internationally and hasbeen awarded international residencies that haveculminated in major public art works. In 2010 she wasinvited to present one of her Tree Study Series at theEvora City Council Festival in Portugal and in 2008,she presented her work to the local community ofHaukivouri, Finland, through the widely acclaimedwork Epiphyte. She is a finalist in The 2012 AlicePrize and solo exhibitions include Counihan Galleryin Brunswick in 2008 and Gippsland Art Gallery, Saleand BLINDSIDE, Melbourne in 2011. Her recent workconsiders the transitory nature of existence and isfocused on reinterpreting science and the naturalworld, particularly plant life and food products.52 URBAN CREATURES
