ROOFS A GUIDE TO THE REPAIR OF HISTORIC ROOFSThis set of slates indicates a sequence of re-roofingprojects, over a period of centuries, on an earlyeighteenth-century country house. On the left, the smallgreenish, hand-dressed slates, held in place by pegsfixed into lime mortar, are thought to represent theoriginal roof covering. Clay tiles may have been used tocover the ridge; the fragment shown here (top left) wasfound in the attic space of the house. An extension tothe house in the 1800s appears to have been theimpetus for re-cladding the entire roof with a blue-greyslate in a gauged slate pattern, possibly Ahenny slate(second from left). This roof survived until the mid-1960s, when neglect over time had caused seriousdamage and undermined the roof covering. The roofwas then re-slated with an artificial fibre-cement tile or‘slate’, retaining one section of the 1800s blue-grey slateroof to the central valley. In recent times, the roof hasbeen fully re-clad using a high-quality natural Welshslate, seen on the right. This sequence highlights the number of times a historicroof may be altered or replaced over the lifetime of ahistoric building and how the materials and detailschange in the process. The original small hand-dressedslate would have provided a very different visual effectin terms of colour, texture and pattern from the recentlylaid machined and regularly sized Welsh slate41
