In this area <strong>the</strong> base <strong>Oligo</strong>cene incision resulted with <strong>the</strong> formation <strong>of</strong> about1000 m deep canyon, whereas <strong>the</strong> Middle <strong>Miocene</strong> and base Messinian canyons are only a few hundred meters deep (a, b).Pr<strong>of</strong>ile (c) is located at a proximal part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> canyon along <strong>the</strong> present-day coastline. In this area <strong>the</strong> base <strong>Oligo</strong>cene canyon isrelatively shallow while deep incision is observed on <strong>the</strong> base Messinian unconformity. Note <strong>the</strong> lateral shift in <strong>the</strong> position <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> canyon during <strong>the</strong> three incision episodes.
