Experimental Musicand undertake interdisciplinaryprojects, but can also provide anopportunity to work in new wayswithin their core discipline throughcollaborative practice. Delivery willcentre around small-group seminars(focused on particular interest areas),and assessment will be based on aportfolio of creative work and a self-evaluation/collaborative processdocument.Trimester 3Major ProjectThis double module represents the culmination of the MMus, and a chance for students to work in aresearch-oriented environmentdependent largely on personaldirection and working methods.Students will use the skills acquiredin their undergraduate work and thefirst two trimesters to produce asubstantial portfolio of practicalcreative work. The exact nature ofthis work is to be negotiated with themodule leader, but it must representthe quantity of work required by a double module. The practicalportfolio will be supported by adissertation of 5-8000 words. It isenvisaged that this dissertation willbe used to contextualise the practicalwork in terms of existing ‘repertoire’and current practice, and to discussany issues raised through the creativeprocess. The module will be largelystudent-led, with most of the workcentred around individual practice.Students will receive tutorial supportat the beginning and end of themodule.Teaching methods and resourcesModules are normally taught viaseminars and practical workshops,supported by individual tutorials. TheMajor Project is research-based andstudent-led, with supporting tutorials.Visiting speakers and other activitiesare arranged as appropriate. You areencouraged to make full use of libraryand IT resources within the University,and ample time will be scheduledin studios and workstation labs forindependent study. In addition to thefacilities available on the NewtonPark campus, including the MichaelTippett Centre, we have access to theUniversity’s new Corsham Courtcentre.Staff and visiting lecturersMMus Experimental Music is led by Dr James Saunders and Dr Andy Keep. James is acomposer, and performs in the duo Parkinson Saunders and withApartment House. He is the editorof the recent Ashgate ResearchCompanion to Experimental Music(which included a chapter by Andy),and has published writing onChristian Wolff, modularity, and theuse of dictaphones in experimentalmusic. He is currently working on abook about text notation (Continuum,2011) with John Lely, supported byan AHRC Research Award, and isediting a forthcoming edition ofContemporary Music Review on the Wandelweiser group.110
