Experimental MusicAndy is a performer whose musicalactivities have evolved through animmense amount of diversity. Hisprofessional practice, teaching, andresearch have slowly gravitated awayfrom studio production and the role ofinstrumentalist into live electronicsperformance, composition, and theteaching of fluid and innovativeapproaches to technology in the sonic arts. Recent writings include‘Instrumentalizing: Approaches toimprovising with sounding objects in experimental music’‚ in JamesSaunders (ed.), The Ashgate ResearchCompanion to Experimental Music.Aldershot: Ashgate, 2009, and ‘Audio Y connectors: My secret for instantguerrilla oscillators‚ raw synthesis anddirty cross modulations’, My FavoriteThings - The Joy of the Gizmo:Leonardo Music Journal 17:30-1 2007.Recent visitors to thedepartment include Tom Johnson,Gavin Bryars, Evan Parker, KaffeMatthews, Robin Rimbaud, JohnLely, Tim Parkinson and LawrenceCrane.Assessment methodsAssessment takes the form ofindividual assignments for eachmodule. These generally consistof a portfolio of practical work withsupporting written documentation.Context and Methodology and theMajor Project also involve small-scale dissertations.Entry requirementsWe offer places on the basis ofour assessment of the student’squality, potential and commitment,and their ability to benefit from thecourse. Normally, but not invariably,a student will have a first degree.Applications are invited fromcandidates with a range of academicdisciplines and from a variety ofnational backgrounds. Applicantsshould submit a portfolio with theirapplication, comprising no more thanthree pieces of representative work.The form of this portfolio will dependon the music you make: we are happyto receive CDs, DVDs, scores,documentation of performancesor installations, or online material asappropriate.
