health studiesSociety and Health introduces thesocio-economic basis of health,illness and inequalities. In additionyou will examine different theoreticalperspectives on health and illness.Work Based Evaluation offers youthe opportunity to develop, implementand evaluate an activity you arecarrying out in the workplace. Youare required to select a projectwithin your area of expertise, workindependently and present anassessed project review. Individualtutorial support will be providedthroughout the module.Dissertation provides theopportunity for in-depth studywithin your field of interest. Amember of the course team willapprove your research proposalbefore you register for the award.You are then allocated a supervisorwho will offer guidance and willmonitor progress towards submissionof the dissertation. Formal supervisorycontact during the module willnormally be about ten hours. Youmay be expected to give interimstatements on the progress of theresearch at specific points duringthe dissertation period.Teaching methods and resourcesEach module has a designatedco-ordinator. Teaching methodsinclude lectures, small and largegroup work, seminars, one to onetutorials, and workshops. The content of amodule determines the nature of thecoursework; however, typically it willcomprise an essay, report, projector/and presentation. Each modulewill require a maximum of 5,000written words and a 2,000 wordequivalent portfolio demonstratingpersonal development. The wordlimit for the Master’s dissertation is 20,000 words.Entry requirementsApplicants are normally expected to have an undergraduate degreepreferably in a relevant subject to theroute being studied or a professionalqualification, for example teaching,nursing, environmental health, socialwork, with a minimum of two yearswork experience. There are two entrypoints, October and February. The closing date for application is normally four weeks prior toregistration. Exemptions may apply through APL/APEL.Student ProfileBen Hume, MSc Health Sudies(Healthcare Management)I joined the NHS through theFinancial Management TrainingScheme and subsequently movedinto general management roles.I am currently an NHS generalmanager at a local hospital trust.I chose the MSc in Health Studiesas I wanted to gain a qualificationin healthcare management to aidmy progress and complement my“on the job” learning. A Master’slevelqualification is also expectedfor senior management positionsin the NHS.I particularly liked the fact that the course is flexible interms of study length and content.I am completing the Master’s on a part-time basis and I havechosen to specialise in healthcaremanagement. You are able tochoose to link your studyassignments directly to work.I chose Bath Spa Universityas it has good, modern andaccessible facilities in an attractivesetting. The academic staff andstudents interact in smaller groupsat postgraduate level, which makesthem accessible and responsiveto our needs.
