Lifelong Learning – Initial Teacher TrainingThe Lifelong Learning InitialTeacher Training (LL ITT)programme is aimed atprofessionals teaching and trainingin the ‘Lifelong Learning’ sector. Thisincludes those teaching, training ortutoring in further education colleges,adult and community learning, privatetraining providers, public sectortraining (e.g. NHS), prison educationand armed forces instructors.This programme will give you thenecessary skills, knowledge andcompetence to undertake yourprofessional role with confidenceand to the mutual benefit of bothteacher and learner.There are 2 awards, the Certificatein Education and the ProfessionalGraduate Certificate in Education.Both awards meet the currentnational requirements for QualifiedTeacher (Learning and Skills), and areendorsed by Standards VerificationUK (SVUK) as appropriate for thatpurpose.THIS PROVISION HAS BEENRECOGNISED AS ONE OF THEBEST IN THE COUNTRY - DURING2007/8 IT WAS AWARDED A GRADE1 IN AN OFSTED INSPECTION.The programme has been developedin partnership with further educationcolleges, and in 2010 was delivered atBridgwater College, Weston Collegeand Wiltshire College.Course structure and contentThis is a part-time, two-yearin-service programme. In the firstyear you focus on developing andextending your teaching/trainingcompetences and enhancing yourprofessional approach to planning,implementing, monitoring, assessingand evaluating your teaching. Thesecond year focuses on developingreflective professional practicewith more emphasis on broadercontextual issues while encouragingyou to concentrate on specific aspectsof your work and roles within theframework of the intentions andcontent of the modules.Teaching methods and resourcesThe overall style of the course isparticipative. A variety of methodsand approaches are used includinggroup work, discussion, case studies,lectures and seminars. The sessionswill provide a supportive forum toshare experiences and benefit fromthe full range of skills and knowledgeavailable. Focused activities andreading advice will be given, andrelevant texts will be made availableduring session times.Assessment methodsEach module has a number ofpractical assessment tasks such as micro-teaching, lesson planning,preparing materials and schemesof work, seminar presentation, and a case study report. You areencouraged to use the assessmenttasks to investigate areas of personaland professional interest. Practicalteaching and professional developmentis developed and assessed on anongoing basis throughout thecourse, largely in your workplace.Entry requirementsIt is expected that applicants willhave a qualification at a minimumof NVQ level 3 or equivalent in theirspecialist area.
