<strong>AMOSKEAG</strong> SALE NO. 76 80 2495. CIVIL WAR LETTERS This collection contains five letters in excellent condition, of a more personal nature. Each is penned in ink on various papers. Two envelopes are included as well, each with a 3 cent George Washington stamp. The envelopes are addressed to Mrs. Anthony Walker, and each letter is addressed to either “Sister”, “Aunt”, “Br. Anthony” or Chloe. The topics spoke revolve around health, family, and community goings on. There is mention in one letter of “Henry” returning from hospital. This may be Pvt. Henry Read as is mentioned in a following letter. Another speaks of the draft in Vermont. Two of the letters are dated 1863. Two others are a similar vintage. The fifth is not dated at all, but appears to be earlier in design. Penned on a folded white sheet that measures 16” by 10”, it was written about the same family. A unique part of this letter is that instead of an envelope, sealing wax was used. There are some remnants of this wax on backside of letter. (582-5D) 2496. CIVIL WAR LETTERS This lot contains two letters in 3” by 5” envelopes, written to Mrs. Anthony Walker, and is addressed “Dear Aunt”, and from Elsie Read. These letters are dated 1864. The first, penned on June 22, talks of home and family, but also mentions a local boy “John” who was wounded and missing in action. The second letter, dated June 28th, talks about her husband who was serving on the 44th Albany, and had recently seen action in Petersburg. Both letters are in excellent condition. (582-5E) 2497. CIVIL WAR LETTERS This lot contains three letters in excellent condition, written by “Elida” to her aunt, Chloe Walker in Westford, MA. The three pen and ink letters were written in Beloit, WI, in 1865; the first in February, the second on April 8th, and the third on May 21st. The first and second letters speak of life at home, family, friends, and other goings on. The third letter speaks of much of the same, but also refers to the recent assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. At the time this letter had been penned the President had been dead for roughly five weeks. Lincoln's body had passed through Chicago 20 days earlier, which is about 98 miles from where the author lived in Beloit. She writes “Do we not all rejoice to think this cruel war is almost over. Although the closing brought sorrow and indignation to the whole nation, the assassination of our noble President, I think there never was one person killed that caused such universal sorrow as did the murder of Mr. Lincoln, but they are left in the hands of one that has justice done.” Although a slightly broken thought, this is a very interesting look at the attitude of a Nation still in morning of her sons, fathers, brothers, and their beloved leader. Included in this lot is a plain manila envelope addressed to “Mrs. Chloe Walker” and is stamped from the postal service in Beloit, WI. A 3 cent George Washington stamp adorns the upper right corner. (582-5F) 2498. CIVIL WAR LETTER This letter was written on plain lined paper and in excellent condition. Dated April 21st, 1865, it was penned by a Ms. Mary Read to her aunt, Mrs. Anthony Walker (possibly Chloe Walker). This letter was written in Albany, NY, one week after the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln and describes in detail her emotion and perspective on the scene. She describes how the event first affected her; “I can't think about anything else but our great loss, it is a Nation's loss. For the last two days it has seemed like Sunday, every thing and every body looked so sad and well they might for our Nation has suffered so long. So many thousands precious lives have been lost and just as peace began to dawn, our beloved Pres. should be taken from us and in such a horrible manner.” She then describes the communities response; “Even those who were not of the same political side could not but admire his firm patriotism and strict adherence to the right. He seemed bound up in the hearts of the American people and all seem so sincerely to mourn his loss. The south too have lost their best and most lenient friend for it seems to be the general opinion Johnson will be more severe than Pres. Lincoln ever was. No punishment seems bad enough to inflict on the base assassinate who did the awful deed.” She goes on to express her feeling about the “assassin”, but then also tells about a letter submitted by his brother, Edwin Booth, a very famous actor. Edwin was an ardent supporter of Lincoln, he claims he cast his first vote ever for the 16th President. She goes on in the letter describing the houses in her city, how they were decorated for mourning. She finishes the letter with more personal thoughts and family issues, even mentioning a lost family member, and how they have no hope of his return, just wishing for closure of his demise. In a plain white envelope and adorned with a 3 cent George Washington stamp, this simple letter gives a first hand account of the reaction of a history making event in our Nation's past, and shows how the entire country was affected by that one act. This is a great piece of Civil War history that will make an excellent addition to any war or Lincolnia collection. (582-5G) 2499. CIVIL WAR LETTER This letter is written to Mrs. Chloe Walker in Westford, MA, from her sister and brother-in-law Sarah and Henry Read. As mentioned in a previous lot, Henry has enlisted in the 6th NH, the “Cheshire” Regiment, and in this letter he expounds his reasoning for doing so. He writes “I suppose you have heard that I am going off, and probably somewhat surprised, as other folks were, but stranger things than this sometimes happen in this little world of ours. I had more than one reason for enlisting. If we have a government somebody must help to maintain it and I feel it is my duty as much as any one to help do it.” The other reason he tells is more “selfish”, and explains about the family's financial hardships, and how this was an opportunity to earn some much needed funds. He goes on to state how he will rely on God to see him through to the end. This letter was penned a short time before Henry was to muster in November of 1863. He finishes the letter with a hope of visiting his family soon. His wife Sarah also adds a few short lines to her sister, stating how Henry is to go to camp soon, and how she hopes to have the strength to endure. What a great picture of a local family's struggle during the most pivotal period of our Nation's history. In Henry's service, he was wounded in battle, then transferred to the 126th Veteran Reserve Corp, and eventually was discharged due to disability in 1864. (582-5H) 2500. CIVIL WAR LETTERS This lot contains two letters of a personal nature. Both were written from family members in upstate NY to Mrs. Anthony Walker in Westford, MA. Although each letter was penned by a different person, in different towns, and at different times, they were both printed on identical pieces of paper. Each has the exact same stamp in the upper left corner. The two letters both talk about life at home during the war, and mention friends and family currently serving the Union. Each offers a nice sentiment, and description of life at home during the Civil War. Included is a manila 3” by 5” envelope with a 3 cent George Washington stamp. (582-5I) 2501. BELGIAN PINFIRE REVOLVER serial #34, 38/9mm caliber Pinfire, 4” barrel with a fair bore. The bore shows little rifling left, is heavily pitted, and there are several tool marks on the outside of the barrel. This unknown Belgian manufacture revolver does have Belgian proof stampings, and the #34 under the barrel. Most of the blue finish is gone with a small amount remaining around the cylinder. The metal surfaces have aged to a brown/ gray patina and there is light oxidation throughout. The wood grips are intact and show much handling. There is a lanyard loop attached to the butt of the grip. The single action works well, but the double action does not operate the hammer. Also the cylinder does not lock-up. All considering it is in good condition for its age. (1306-011510JDC) {ANTIQUE} (50/75) 2502. LOT OF SCOPES This lot contains five assorted rifle scopes. The first is a Bushnell Sportview 3-9x35 in silver. It is a 1” tube and has the “TV” view reticle and comes with a set of stainless steel Ruger rings for a Mini-14 or 30 Ranch Rifle. It is in excellent condition but needs to be cleaned. The second is a Tasco Pronghorn 2-7x32 1” blued scope with a standard duplex reticle. It is in need of a cleaning but in excellent condition otherwise. The third is a J.C. Higgins Rifleman Senior 2 1/2x 1” scope. It is blue with brass blocks for the windage and elevation adjustments. It has a fine crosshair reticle, and comes with 1” grooved receiver rings. There is some light oxidation near the objective, but is in very good condition overall. The last two scopes are 7/8” Rimfire scopes also made by J.C. Higgins. The first is an M36 with a fine crosshair and Weaver tip-off mount for a grooved receiver. It has a dent in the tube near the objective but is in good condition otherwise. The other is a 4x with a fine crosshair and Weaver style grooved receiver rings. It is in very good overall condition. As mentioned these could all use a good scrubbing, but are good usable scopes. (3478-011510JDC)
2503. LOT OF SCOPES This lot contains three rifle scopes. The first is a like new, in the box, Tasco Super Marksman 3-9x40. This “waterproof” 1” tube scope comes a fine crosshair, lens caps, and Weaver style rings all in the original Tasco box. The second is a Weaver Marksman 4x with a fine crosshair. It is in very good condition. The last of the three, is a Marlin 3-7x20, 7/8” scope with grooved receiver rings. It also has a a fine crosshair and is in very good condition. The later two scopes could use a good cleaning. (3478-011510JDC1) 2504. SCOPE LOT This lot contains one Leupold M8 3x 1” tube scope. It has a gloss blued finish and a standard duplex reticle. With a little cleaning this scope would be in excellent condition. This is a perfect scope for the dense New England terrain. (3478-011510JDC2) 2505. SCOPE LOT This lot contains one Leupold Vari-XII 1-4x scope. It has a 1” tube with a standard duplex reticle and gloss blue finish. It is in excellent condition and would clean-up nice. Great for a shotgun, muzzleloader, or any rifle used in New England. (3478-011510JDC3) 2506. SCOPE LOT This lot contains one, like new, in the box BSA Sweet 17 2-7x32 scope for a 17HMR. Specifically designed for that caliber, this scope would go great on any 17 HMR rifle. It has a blue finish, with a standard duplex, and has all of the papers in the box. Did I mention “like new”? (3478-011510JDC4) 2507. US SPRINGFIELD BAYONET This lot is a Model 1873 US Springfield Trapdoor bayonet in excellent condition. The metal surfaces have a rich blued finish, which is flaking to a very pleasing plumb brown patina. The finish has some very light pitting with minor oxidation throughout. The “US” stamp is clear at the base of the 18” full, fullered blade, and the 3” collar is complete with locking ring. This is an excellent specimen of a classic military rifle's bayonet. (3577-2) 2508. MILITARY LOT This lot contains an assortment of various service ribbons, medals, pins, and buttons. Included are 18 service ribbons from WWII and Korea, two Marksmanship medals, twelve pieces of either collar brass or lapel pins, six brass buttons with silver “peace” eagles, 15 pieces of shoulder bar rank insignia, nine pieces of “private” rank insignia, 50 assorted US Naval brass buttons, 20 US Army assorted brass buttons, 20 assorted civilian brass and tin buttons, four shoulder epaulets, one gold shoulder cord, seven VFW badges and collar pieces, two phoenix clip-on medallions with “Ex Flammis Clarior” or “Brighter from the Flame” written on them, nine military and civilian patches, three cufflinks with other button items, one brass reproduction “CSA” belt buckle, two dog tags with the name and information for “Guido Fiorenza” who served in WWII, a Daisy medallion, and a 2” gold miniature of the Statue of Liberty. All items are in very good to excellent condition. (3105-7A) 2509. MILITARY LOT This lot contains five items. The first is an adjustable sight for an M15 grenade launcher. Made to fit the 1903, M1, and M1 Carbine rifles, this handy little sight would fit on a disc that was affixed to the left side of the stock on any of the three rifles listed above. Included is an OD green canvas carrying case. The date stamp on the case is believed to be 1944, but is blurry and hard to read. In excellent condition overall, there are a few light spots of oxidation on this authentic GI piece. The second item is a green canvas bandolier with two, three position plastic holders for 37mm grenades. There is no writing or stamping on these items, so they may be reproductions. But they are in excellent condition and could be used for a number of purposes. The next item is a small bag of assorted 1911 parts. Included are a barrel bushing, a recoil spring cap, a slide stop/ release lever, and a magazine release button. All are a blued finish and appear to be GI issue. The last two items include a hefty Corbin padlock, with a small piece of chain, but no key, and an NRA reflector. Both are in very good condition. (3105-7B) 2510. MILITARY LOT This lot contains two military lapel or collar pins. Both are made of brass with black onyx enamel faces and raised brass motifs. The first depicts a sword with a serpent entwined around it. This depiction refers to a medical unit, possibly an Army unit. The second shows a challis with a serpent dipping its head into the bowl. This refers to a pharmaceutical unit and is of the same vintage as the first. Both of these have pinned backs and are in excellent condition. (3105-7C) 2511. WOOD AMMUNITION CRATE This lot is a Winchester crate for small arms ammunition. It measures 15” long by 9 1/2” wide by 9” tall, and is missing the top. The crate is marked Winchester Repeating Arms and had 500 rounds of 12 ga 2 5/8” shotshell loads. (1641-28) 2512. MILITARY TOY LOT This lot contains two cast aluminum Tootsie Toy 1950's era mili- <strong>AMOSKEAG</strong> SALE NO. 76 tary jeeps. Both are identical models, and have an OD green finish. Some little dings and scratches, but otherwise in excellent condition. (3105- 7D) 2513. LOT OF BULLET MOULDS This lot contains one Racine single cavity bullet mould with handles. It is in excellent condition and is for a Spencer. The mould number is 535370 and produces a 379 grain RN bullet. Included is a single cast lead bullet with slight imperfections. (2831-3) 2514. LOT OF BULLET MOULDS This lot contains one Racine single cavity bullet mould with handles. It is in excellent condition and is for a 40 SS. The mould number is 408331 and produces a 331 grain RN bullet. Included is the original box with instructions. (2831-4) 2515. LOT OF BULLET MOULDS This lot contains one Lyman double cavity bullet mould. It is in excellent condition and is in the original box. The mould number is 401043, and it is for a 38/40. It produces a 175 grain FN bullet. (2831-7) 2516. LOT OF BULLET MOULDS This lot contains one Lyman single cavity bullet mould. It is in excellent condition and is in the original box. The mould number is 533476, and it is for a .54 caliber Sharps or other blackpowder firearm. It produces a 405-410 grain FN bullet with a hollow base. It includes a #15 Hollow base adapter, but no handles. (2831-8) 2517. LOT OF BULLET MOULDS This lot contains one Lyman single cavity bullet mould, and one Ideal single cavity mould. They are in excellent condition and are in the same box. The Lyman mould number is 452839, and it is for a 45 caliber pistol. It produces a 185 grain WC-RN Bullet. The Ideal mould is number 535149, and is for a 50 caliber rifle. It produces a 450 grain RN bullet. (2831-9) 2518. MARLIN RELOADING TOOL This antique tool was patented in 1881 and was used to reload cartridges for Marlin rifles. This particular model was used to reload 40-60 cartridges and has a serial number of 2518 7504. It includes a bullet mould and powder measure, and every step needed to reload the 40-60 cartridge. A hefty and well made tool, unfortunately the company logo has been removed from the spruce cutter. Several tool marks, moderate patina, and light oxidation adorn this interesting piece of Marlin history. This is a must have for any serious Marlin collector. (2831-1) (200/300) 2510 81
