SENIORSUncle Lou’s visits were much like ChristmasDidn’t he just get anaward for workingon the marble inthe Waldorf Astoriain New York? We even had achip to prove it. Uncle Lou itwas who at least once a yeardescended on our farm out inNorthcote to bring us unspeakablejoy. My mother’s brother, oneof the four who made up herfamily, had no children of hisown when we were youngstersand when he came it was likeChristmas all over again, eventhough our Christmases backthen were nothing to writehome about.Uncle Lou often came withouttelling Mother in advance. She would much prefer if hewould at least send us a letterthat he was on his way. Thenthe house could be torn apartfrom top to bottom, so thateverything shone like glass:our feather mattress taken offthe bed upstairs, the felt onefrom Mother and Father’s bedhauled up to replace it, braidedrugs beaten with the broom onthe clothes line and the red andwhite checked oilcloth on thetable in the kitchen replacedwith a white linen one Motherhad brought to the farm. But when he came unannounced, always on a Saturday,we knew he was on his waybefore he hit the yard. Hewould start blowing the hornof his big black Buick when heturned into our long lane andnever let up until he came toa screeching halt at the backdoor.Mother had time only tochange her apron and smoothback her hair, and then shewould cry. I could neverunderstand if she was so happywhy she would cry. My sisterAudrey said it was from sheerjoy. I thought he looked like heshould be a member of Parliament. He always wore greyflannel trousers, pressed knifesharpand flannel shirts openat the neck. Uncle Lou was talland as my sister Audrey oncesaid, he even looks important. We five children never took oureyes off the back seat of the bigBuick. We knew for a fact thatinside his big brown cow-hideMARY COOKMary Cook’s Memoriessuitcases would be presentsbeyond belief. Always therewere yards of silk for Motherand a new purse: big, with goldclasps and long handles. Wehad no idea how he knew oursizes, but each of us would geta new piece of clothing andeverything always fit like it hadbeen made for us.Uncle Lou would first stopat a grocery store in Renfrewand there would be grapes, bananas and real ham, not likewe had in the smoke house, butbig slices -- thick and just rightfor sandwiches. It would take ages to unpackthe Buick. When it had beenemptied, the brothers wouldcarry the cow-hide suitcases upto the room my sister Audreyand I shared and Uncle Louwould take over the bed. Wewould move down to the cretoncouch in the kitchen.Mother’s cheeks would bered as tomatoes and Father, who could never understandwhat all the fuss was about, would treat Uncle Lou like anyother visitor who came out tothe farm in Northcote. That meant he would stillR0012123286slurp his tea out of his saucerand sit with his feet on theoven door at night reading theOttawa Farm Journal or theFamily Herald and WeeklyStar. As the evenings wore on,Mother and Uncle Lou wouldtalk about New York and themany years Mother lived there. Are We Aging Well?Connected to your communityHe would tell her about thechanges: how the elevatedtrains went for miles and milesnow and how a place called theBronx was the place to live.Mother would listen wide-eyedand ask questions and the talkwould go on and on.See UNCLE, page 20Join Dr. Samir Sinha, an internationally respected physicianand influential advocate for the health care needs of seniors,as he shares his recommendations for a Seniors Strategy forOntario at the Alzheimer Society’s Annual General Meeting.Guests will also hear from Mike Morissette, a person livingwith dementia.Date/Time: June 13, 2013 from 8:30 a.m. – 11 a.m. (Open to the general public.)Location: Hampton Inn Ottawa & Conference CentreCost: $25/person includes refreshmentsPre-registration is required.Call 613-523-4004 or register online at www.alzheimer.ca/ottawaR0012129135ADMISSION!12 Hours of Great Local Music by:Gospel & BluesCountry & FolkClassic Rock& Rock11am12pm1pm2pm3pm4pm5pm6pm7pm8pmMaria HawkinsJill JefferyPine Bark Bunch(Bill Connelly)Janika BenoitJeff ClimoKelly Ann WilsonKyle FelhaverRainwater WhiskeySlightly Out of TuneDisturbing the PeaceROBERT SIMPSON PARK • SATURDAY, JUNE 8TH, 2013Family Fun • Children’s Activities • Vendors • Food VendorsParking at ADHS with shuttle(parking at the park for accessible needs only)RAIN OR SHINE!9pmFeature Canadian Recording Artist:Suzie McNeil“Believe”, “Merry Go Round” & “Tough Love”sponsored by2nd AnnualSeniors 55+Meet and GreetJune 10th 11:30-2:00 2nd Annual pmKanata Recreation Seniors 55+ CentreMeet and Greet100 Walter Baker Place(off Terry Fox)June 10th 11:30-2:00 pmKanata Recreation Centre100 Walter Baker Place(off Terry Fox)Special Musical GuestRobin AverillSpecial Musical GuestRobin AverillEntertainment and Light Lunch provided byEntertainment our generous and Light Lunch sponsors: provided byour generous sponsors:Chartwell Chartwell Retirement Residences Kanata KanataShoppers Shoppers Home Health Care Hazeldean Hazeldean Rd.
