Y. Jackson SecondarySchool is number 11 in theworld and second in Canadafor its fundraising efforts forKiva, a non-profit organizationthat connects people throughthe lending of money to helpalleviate poverty.The weather cleared enoughon Friday afternoon for a Grade11 entrepreneurship class tohost the second-annual KivaCarnival on May 24.“We want to be the topschool in Canada,” said studentorganizer Chris Nguyenabout the school’s fundraisingefforts.To date, the school hasloaned $39,000 so far, saidteacher Mark Hoogenraad.“We’re in an entrepreneurclass,” said James Lever, one ofthe student co-ordinators. “Tosupport other entrepreneurs isimportant.”“It’s important ... to help getthe economy going,” addedMegan Hirschfeld, another studentco-ordinator.The money that gets loaned ispaid back over a period of time.When the funds are returned tothe school, the students choosenew entrepreneurs to assist.“They don’t have the sameopportunities we’ve had,” saidClaudia Warner-Jacobs, a studentorganizer.Some of the entrepreneursA. Y. has helped come fromHaiti, Kenya, Afghanistan andDominican Republic, saidClaudia.“Each person has their goalamount,” she said, adding theschool aims to help as manybusinesses get off the groundas possible by lending around$50 to each person helped.“It’s nice to see the studentsachieving something,” saidHoogenraad. “It’s a hand up,not a hand out.”San Francisco-based Kivaworks with microfinance institutionson five continents toprovide loans to people withoutaccess to traditional bankingsystems.
