newsConnected to your communityOC Transpo lowers Para faresOne-year dropin fares fixes‘inequitable’ pricesLaura Muellerlaura.mueller@metroland.comEMC news - OC Transpo is addressingconcerns about inequality bylowering fares on its accessible ParaTranspo vehicles for one year.On May 22, council approved thetemporary change to the fares that gointo effect July 1. While a regular cashfare will become $3.40, Para Transpousers will instead pay $2.70.The summer fare table was designedto support the full launch ofthe Presto smart card, a new way topay for rides on OC Transpo. A farepaid using the Presto card “e-purse”cash balance will cost $2.72.To encourage riders to pick up afree card and switch to the new paymentmethod, OC Transpo set cashand ticket fares higher than buying thesame trip using Presto.Transit commission chairwomanCoun. Diane Deans said the “unintendedconsequence” of the new faresis that “We ended up with fares thatwere higher for Para Transpo customersthat were higher than everyoneelse.”“We heard loud and clear that thiswas an inequitable situation,” shesaid.Accessibility advocate Kevin Kinsella, who brought the issue to thecommission’s attention on April 17,applauded the move.“It really speaks to the flexibilityand willingness of the commissionand council to deal with concerns asthey come up,” he said.Metrolinx, the provincial agencythat oversees Presto, gave the citya discount on the system becausetechnical glitches delayed its launch. That discount will help make up fora $150,000 loss in revenue of settinglower Para Transpo fares, Deans said.Presto cards are available now attransit stations, OC Transpo sales centresand online at prestocard.ca andwill go into use as of July 1.OC Transpo is working on a standaloneelectronic fare payment systemfor Para Transpo that would also beaccepted on conventional OC Transpovehicles.Have your say!Email letters to:blair.edwards@metroland.comFileOC Transpo is addressing concerns about inequality by lowering fareson its accessible Para Transpo vehicles for one year.Your Choice Realty Inc.BrokerageeACH OFFICe IS IndePendenTLY OWned And OPeRATed59 Beckwith Street North Smiths Falls613-283-2121www.c21smithsfalls.caSelling HouSeS...
