My veryfavourite was one called I Hada Dream Dear. I thought itwas very sad, but beautiful.Sometimes I would see a tear rolldown Mother’s cheek when thesong was over.I knew she would be rememberingthose happy years whenshe lived in the city she lovedbefore she left for the backwoodsof Renfrew County.Even though Uncle Louhelped Father around the farm,he never seemed to get a mark onthose grey flannel pants and shirt.Every night, when he took offhis shiny shoes, he buffed themwith a cloth made especially forthat purpose and he had woodforms he inserted into his shoeswhen he wasn’t wearing them.My sister Audrey said shewas quite sure all important mendid the same thing with theirshoes when they took them off atnight, but I couldn’t for the lifeof me ever see my father goingto that trouble with the blacklaced boots he wore to church onSunday. While Uncle Lou wasvisiting us we would have tripsinto Renfrew to the picture showat least twice during his stay.We would have cracker jacks tomunch on during the movie andalways we stopped for ice creamon the way home at Briscoe’sCAT OF THE WEEKI AM“EDICUS”As you can see I am extremely handsome if I may say so ... friendly, loving, playful andhealthy.. and I do need you ... why you may ask .... I want my own family, my own lap andmy very special cuddles, hugs and kisses ... Plain and simple I want to belong to you andshare my life with you. I do live with other cats, I am laid back and easy going ... would youconsider to meet me and have a chat ... I am young at heart and body ... we can sharemany years together. Looking for volunteersand foster families to help out with cat care. We are a registered charity.R0012126289Connected to your communityGeneral Store, which I wasgrateful stayed open every nightuntil at least 11 p.m.Too soon it would be time forUncle Lou to pack up and headback to New York. Whole quarterswould be thrust into each ofour hands and I knew he wouldgive Mother a few bills toowhich she would immediatelyput in the blue sugar bowl withher egg money. Everett wouldswing wide the gate going out tothe lane and with the horn goingfull blast, Uncle Lou would spinthe tires on the Buick and he wasgone. And there would be such asilence in the old log house, andI would wonder if it would everbe the same again. Mother wouldcry silently, wiping her eyes andblowing her nose into her apron, and that night our prayers wouldbe for Uncle Lou’s safe trip toNew York. And when it cametime for our silent prayers eachof us were expected to say beforewe left Mother’s knee, I wouldpray that Uncle Lou wouldreturn soon. It wasn’t only forthe candy, the picture shows andthe rides in the big black Buick,it was because his visit wouldbring Mother unspeakable joyand for a time, release her fromthe bonds that held her prisoneron that farm in Renfrew County.Advertising FeAtureDebunking myths about life insurance ByMark DiLLonR0012122440Life insurance is not a simple product. Trying tounderstand all the different options and theirrespective benefits can require confronting severalwell-entrenched myths. To help set the record straight and guidecustomers toward making the choice that bestsuits them, Cathy Preston, vice president, Life &Health, RBC Insurance, addresses the five mostcommon misconceptions about life insurance.Topping the list, according to Preston, is people’s beliefthat all their insurance needs are covered throughwork. “Group life insurance plans typically providelimited coverage, and the insurance often ends whenyou change jobs. It’s important to understand theextent of your coverage and fill in any gaps,” she says. And while many people believe their investment dollarscan be put to better use elsewhere, as Preston pointsout, “Many life insurance policies provide protectionfor your loved ones along with a tax-sheltered investmentoption that can grow your money.”Some think life insurance is only for full-time workersor high-income earners, but there are cases where itcan be helpful regardless of income or employmentstatus. “For example, if you have dependents, youwould need to cover childcare and housekeepingcosts in a parent’s absence,” Preston notes. And lifeinsurance isn’t only for those with dependents, sheadds. “Life insurance can also help protect your partnerfrom struggling with a single income and ensureyour debts are paid, which is important regardless ofwhether you have children,” she says. Finally, Preston insists that life insurance need not beprohibitively expensive. She indicates that a 10-yearterm policy with a death benefit of $250,000 wouldcost about $28 per month for a healthy 45-year-oldCanadian male non-smoker, while a policy witha death benefit of $200,000 would cost $15 permonth for a healthy 35-year-old female nonsmoker.“Life insurance can be cost-effective,” shesays, adding that more information is available atwww.rbcinsurance.com/familypricing or by callingRBC Insurance at 1-888-528-5507.20 Kanata Kourier-Standard EMC - Thursday, May 30, 2013
