The city wants to hear fromyou.Interactive surveys that let people draw theirfrequent routes are now online and will helpguide how the city defines its active-transportationnetwork for the next two decades. Two versions of the survey – one focused onwalking and one on bicycling – are available atottawa.ca/liveableottawa until June 7 as part ofthe Liveable Ottawa Official Plan and masterplan updates. The surveys allow respondents to identifyareas where sidewalks, pathways or cyclinglanes are missing and needed.People can use the interactive maps to drawtheir frequent bicycle trips and to identifyroads or intersections that are dangerous oruncomfortable for pedestrians or cyclists tonavigate. The survey tool helps define what“type” of cyclist you are by asking how comfortableyou are on roads, cycling lanes andpathways. The pedestrian and cycling survey is thesecond phase of the city’s online engagementstrategy for the Liveable Ottawa consultation. The first survey launched in January and ranuntil March. It focused on general questions such aswhat people like about their neighbourhoodand why they chose to live there, how they getaround the city, infrastructure upgrades neededand issues related to intensification, such asthe height of tall buildings.Just over half of the 8,068 participants completedall 34 of the questions in the first onlinesurvey, which councillors applauded as engagingthe largest number of citizens of any citypublic consultation. The area including the Glebe, Old OttawaSouth, Old Ottawa East, Carleton Universityand Dow’s Lake had the highest participation, with 500 respondents from those neighbourhoods.Orléans was the second highest with252 respondents, followed by Lowertown,Sandy Hill and the University of Ottawa with248.“Since answering the questions was notmandatory, it is not possible to know whereresidents stopped completing the survey,” citypublic engagement specialist Barbara Backlandwrote in an email.“The survey was broken down into sections,so residents could have skipped around thesurvey and answered whatever was of interestto them.”The city also held a public open house inJanuary that attracted 179 people, a developmentforum with 31 industry representativesand a community forum with 110 representativesin February. Those consultations will guide revised recommendationsfor updates to the city’s OfficialPlan that will be tabled at planning committeeon June 25.A draft report outlining how pedestrian, cycling, transit and road projects are prioritizedwill be tabled at the transportation committeein July.Consultation on both the transportationmaster plan priorities and the Official Planamendments will continue throughout thesummer, with council consideration and votingscheduled to take place in October and November. The entire exercise should be wrapped upby mid-December.
