U.S. <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> Veterans Affairs<br />

The McGuire VA Medical Center has participated <strong>in</strong> a Veterans Affairs energy<br />

monitor<strong>in</strong>g program for the past 20 years. The 2,000,000 square foot build<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

which earned an <strong>Energy</strong> Star score <strong>of</strong> 95, underwent upgrades <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g replacement<br />

<strong>of</strong> light<strong>in</strong>g with T-8 lamps, replacement <strong>of</strong> a chiller with a high efficiency unit,<br />

replacement <strong>of</strong> steam traps with improved units, and replacement <strong>of</strong> boiler controls<br />

with energy-efficient units. These projects have resulted <strong>in</strong> significant improvements<br />

<strong>in</strong> the facility’s energy sav<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

Ch<strong>in</strong>coteague National Wildlife Refuge, Virg<strong>in</strong>ia<br />

The construction <strong>of</strong> the Center will elim<strong>in</strong>ate nearly $800,000 <strong>in</strong> backlog ma<strong>in</strong>tenance<br />

needs by replac<strong>in</strong>g five <strong>in</strong>adequate build<strong>in</strong>gs with the new facility. Much <strong>of</strong><br />

the currently occupied land will revert to wildlife uses, and xeriscap<strong>in</strong>g and onsite<br />

wastewater recycl<strong>in</strong>g will lead to reduced site disturbance. The project utilized<br />

daylight<strong>in</strong>g and energy-efficient light<strong>in</strong>g as well as geothermal heat pumps and<br />

rapidly renewable build<strong>in</strong>g materials.
