Other wellknownbenzodiazepines include Valium and Xanax. Benzodiazepinesare primarily prescribed by doctors to treat anxiety, panic attacks,and insomnia.Rohypnol was first manufactured and patented by the pharmaceuticalcompany Hoffman-La Roche in 1963 as a way to treat insomniaand anxiety. Rohypnol was intended to be an analogue of Valiumand other benzodiazepine drugs. In 1984, Rohypnol becameclassified as a Schedule IV controlled substance by the DEA. However,due to increasing reports of Rohypnol abuse and misuse, it wasreclassified as a Schedule III drug in 1995, requiring morethorough record keeping by manufacturers, pharmacies, anddoctors. Further increases in illegal use of the drug in the UnitedStates during the late 1990s has prompted the DEA to considerclassifying it as a Schedule I controlled substance throughout theUnited States, although to date only several states have actuallydone so. Despite heavy restrictions on its use in the United States,Rohypnol is still sold legally by prescription for the treatment ofinsomnia and as a sedative prior to surgery in many Latin American54
