the sinner’s prayer through the ministry of our church lastyear.” It is quite another thing to say “20 men got saved in theprison last night” or “500 people got saved through theministry of our church last year.” is is especially true whenthe one giving the report knows by experience that most ofhis “converts” don’t pan out and that most of the professionsproduced in his ministry are as empty as a homeless man’srefrigerator.ConclusionIn conclusion, I am not saying that there are forms ofCalvinism that are Scriptural and that it is only some types ofmore extreme Calvinism that are unscriptural. Spurgeon saidthat we need to go back to the Calvinism of John Calvin. Asmuch as I respect Charles Haddon Spurgeon (knowing, too, that he was only a man), I must disagree with that grand oldwarrior in this matter. I say we need to go far beyond that.Calvin himself went back as far as Augustine, but that, too, isnot nearly far enough. In fact, depending on the veryundependable Augustine was one of Calvin’s chief errors. Wedon’t need to go back to Calvin or Augustine. We need to goall the way back to “the faith once delivered to the saints” as itis perfectly and sufficiently recorded in the Scriptures! at iswhere our systematic theology must start AND END.49
