thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit ofgrace?” (Heb. 10:29).Either this verse means that a saved person can lose hissalvation, or it means that a person can come close to beingsaved without actually being regenerated and can then turnaway finally from salvation by rejecting the efficacy of theblood and the gospel of grace. We believe that it teaches thelatter. In our church planting ministry we have seen manyHindus and Buddhists attend church services and purchaseBibles and look eagerly into the things of Christ and evendesire to be baptized and publicly testify that they believedthe gospel only to finally turn away and to return to humanreligion and idolatry and to renounce the blood of Christ andsalvation by grace. ese were not sanctified in the sense ofsalvation, but they were sanctified in the sense of having beenenlightened and convicted by the Spirit and in the sense ofhaving professed to believe in the covenant or gospel of grace.is verse contradicts the Calvinist doctrines of LimitedAtonement and Irresistible Grace. At the least this versesteaches that the blood of Christ was available to them forsalvation but that they rejected it.JESUS REBUKED THE CITIES OF ISRAEL BECAUSETHEY DID NOT REPENT -- “en began he to upbraidthe cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not. Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woeunto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which weredone in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they wouldhave repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. But I sayunto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon atthe day of judgment, than for you. And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down tohell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until thisday. But I say unto you, at it shall be more tolerable forthe land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than forthee” (Matt. 11:20-24).58
Jesus did not deal with men on the basis of sovereignelection and sovereign reprobation. He dealt with them onthe basis of human responsibility to respond to the divine callof repentance. Christ teaches here that men not only areresponsible to repent but they can repent if they will. If theycould not have repented, why are they upbraided as if theycould have repented? If some men cannot repent, why are allmen commanded to repent (Acts 17:30)?JESUS TAUGHT US TO PRAY THAT GOD’S WILL BEDONE ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN -- “And he saidunto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art inheaven, Hallowed be thy name. y kingdom come. ywill be done, as in heaven, so in earth” (Lk. 11:2).is means, of course, that God’s will is not currently doneon earth as it is in heaven, which means that God’ssovereignty does not mean that His will is always done. Mancan thwart God’s will -- not ultimately as far as His eternalplan goes, but in many ways and in many times.GOD INVITES ALL THE ENDS OF THE EARTH TO BESAVED -- “Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends ofthe earth: for I am God, and there is none else” (Isa. 45:22).If words many anything, this universal divine invitationmeans that God earnestly desires to save all men and all mencan be saved, and this was written during the Old Testamentdispensation before the coming of Christ.GOD INVITES ALL WHO ARE THIRSTY TO COMEAND DRINK FREELY -- “Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye,buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without moneyand without price. Wherefore do ye spend money for thatwhich is not bread? and your labour for that whichsatisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye thatwhich is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness.Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soulshall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David” (Isaiah 55:1-3).59
