If theCalvinist doctrines <strong>of</strong> sovereign election and the bondage <strong>of</strong>the will and sovereign calling are correct, this passage doesn’tactually mean what it says, and a blessed and gloriousuniversal invitation <strong>of</strong> salvation to sinners is turned intosomething that is reserved solely for a pre-selected group <strong>of</strong>sinners.As for faith, this passage says that it is nigh to every sinner.Sinners can believe in their hearts upon Christ. ey canconfess Christ with their mouths. ough they are totallyunrighteous and dead in trespasses and sins, this does notmean that they cannot believe the gospel.WHOSOEVER BELIEVES ON CHRIST OR CALLSUPON HIS NAME SHALL BE SAVED --“I am come a light into the world, that whosoeverbelieveth on me should not abide in darkness” (Jn. 12:46).“And it shall come to pass, that WHOSOEVER shall callon the name <strong>of</strong> the Lord shall be saved” (Acts 2:21).e Bible repeatedly says that salvation is for “whosoever”and a typical Bible-believing non-theologian would concludefrom this that any and every sinner today is both invited tocome to Christ and by God’s grace CAN come to Christ. Totreat the “whosoever shalls” <strong>of</strong> the New Testament as Calvindid, though, is to render them <strong>of</strong> no effect. According toCalvin, “whosoever” does not really mean whosoever; itmeans “whosoever <strong>of</strong> the elect.” Even when Calvin claims, out<strong>of</strong> one side <strong>of</strong> his mouth (such as in his commentary on John62
