If Paul were a Calvinist, he would not have written thisbecause he would know that the elect don’t need persuading,and the non-elect can’t be persuaded! e sinner is so dead inhis sins that apart from regeneration and “the gi <strong>of</strong> faith” hecouldn’t possibly understand and respond to humanpersuasion.SALVATION CAN BE NEGLECTED -- “How shall weescape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the firstbegan to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto usby them that heard him” (Heb. 2:3).is exhortation makes no sense in light <strong>of</strong> Calvinistdoctrine. If election is as the Calvinist teaches and it is amatter <strong>of</strong> an individual being sovereignly chosen by God,how could the elect neglect salvation and how could the nonelectdo anything other than neglect salvation?PROFESSING CHRISTIANS ARE EXHORTED NOT TOHAVE AN EVIL HEART OF UNBELIEF AND NOT TODEPART FROM THE LIVING GOD -- “Take heed,brethren, lest there be in any <strong>of</strong> you an evil heart <strong>of</strong>unbelief, in departing from the living God. But exhort oneanother daily, while it is called To day; lest any <strong>of</strong> you behardened through the deceitfulness <strong>of</strong> sin. For we are madepartakers <strong>of</strong> Christ, if we hold the beginning <strong>of</strong> ourconfidence stedfast unto the end” (Heb. 3:12-14).If the elect are predetermined “sovereignly” and if electionhas nothing whatsoever to do with the sinner himselfaccepting or rejecting, believing or disbelieving, and if he isirresistibly drawn and sovereignly kept so that he surelyperseveres, what could this exhortation possibly mean? Howcould the sovereignly elected, irresistibly drawn elect departfrom God, and how could the non-elect do anything otherthan depart from God?WE MUST LABOUR TO ENTER INTO GOD’S REST --“ere remaineth therefore a rest to the people <strong>of</strong> God.
