In 2009, a total of 1 533 detainees used <strong>the</strong>seservices, which is an increase by 10% compared to 2008 (Dialog <strong>2010</strong>b).9.6 Reintegrati<strong>on</strong> of drug users after release frompris<strong>on</strong>The majority of reintegrati<strong>on</strong> measures for drug users is also open to former pris<strong>on</strong>ers.Specific informati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> reintegrati<strong>on</strong> of (former) drug users after release frompris<strong>on</strong> is available in a diploma <strong>the</strong>sis that investigates <strong>the</strong> voluntary probati<strong>on</strong>assistance service for inmates granted pris<strong>on</strong> leave 37 (Grubinger 2009).Impris<strong>on</strong>ment under eased c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s as well as pris<strong>on</strong> leave granted to inmates of <strong>the</strong>pris<strong>on</strong> of Favoriten (Vienna) aims at making it possible for pris<strong>on</strong>ers to prepare for <strong>the</strong>time after impris<strong>on</strong>ment under c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s near to real life. When inmates aretransferred from regular wards to this type of impris<strong>on</strong>ment, <strong>the</strong> services delivered nol<strong>on</strong>ger focus <strong>on</strong> addicti<strong>on</strong> and treating addicti<strong>on</strong> but <strong>on</strong> managing everyday life. Duringthis stage, social workers primarily provide advice and support, also in a c<strong>on</strong>fr<strong>on</strong>tati<strong>on</strong>alway. Pris<strong>on</strong>ers are encouraged to find perspectives for life after release and toprepare for this step. In additi<strong>on</strong>, inmates granted eased c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s or pris<strong>on</strong> leave aresupported by <strong>the</strong> voluntary probati<strong>on</strong> officers of <strong>the</strong> Neustart associati<strong>on</strong> who haveattended an obligatory selecti<strong>on</strong> course organised by <strong>the</strong> Associati<strong>on</strong> of Probati<strong>on</strong>Assistance (Grubinger 2009).Am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> pris<strong>on</strong>ers surveyed, 10 out of 17 said that <strong>the</strong> services by <strong>the</strong> probati<strong>on</strong>officers were helpful as this was an opportunity to talk about problems. Five of <strong>the</strong>resp<strong>on</strong>dents menti<strong>on</strong>ed that <strong>the</strong> officers helped <strong>the</strong>m find a flat; four indicated supportregarding c<strong>on</strong>tacts to authorities, and three, regarding addicti<strong>on</strong> problems. The<strong>the</strong>mes addressed most often in <strong>the</strong> talks with <strong>the</strong> probati<strong>on</strong> officers were housing,family matters, employment and addicti<strong>on</strong>. Issues such as relapse, private problems,jobs and problems with authorities played a prominent role. The frequency of meetings(every two weeks) was regarded as exactly right by most of <strong>the</strong> inmates.
