Vacation PolicyWe do not advise students to miss school. If a parent chooses to take their child out of school fora vacation, notification must be made at least two (2) days in advance to the school. Familytrips/vacations will be excused for a maximum of five (5) days per school year. More than five (5) dayswill be considered unexcused. If homework is requested, the office will notify teachers of the student’sleave, and homework be given to the child. If homework is requested prior to the vacation, it must bereturned complete immediately upon the student’s return to school. Refer to page 8,(academics/homework policy) for all other situations regarding homework.STUDENT ATTENDANCE GUIDELINESStudent Absence:<strong>School</strong> attendance is a responsibility that is shared by student, parent and school. Absences for"valid cause" are defined by Board Policy 7:70 and section 122-26-2A of the Illinois <strong>School</strong> Code asbeing absent due to:1. Illness of the pupil2. Family emergency or death in the family3. Doctor or dentist appointment4. Observance of a religious holiday5. Whenever the principal considers the exemption from attendance to be in the best interest of thestudent.Some reasons for absence, but not all inclusive, that are unexcused according to state and/or localregulations are as follows:Car trouble, No gainful employment, Missing the school bus, Babysitting, Birthdays,Oversleeping, Hair appointments, Trips not approved, Photography sessions, Shopping,Absences not verified by parent call, Leaving school without permission, Leaving assigned areawithout permissionIf no parent explanation is provided within 24 hours of an absence, the absence will be consideredunexcused. A doctor's statement may be required to explain excessive absenteeism when deemednecessary by the building principal or his designee.<strong>School</strong> Responsibility:1. The attendance of all students will be monitored on a daily basis. If we have not received a call by10 A.M., we will attempt to notify the parent of the child's absence.2. After 10 excused absences, a doctor’s note may be required.3. The principal or his designee may also meet with any student experiencing attendance problemsto discuss the effect attendance has on school performance.4. When deemed appropriate, the principal will initiate legal referral under terms of the Illinois<strong>School</strong> Code Section 5-26-2A. The referral will be made in writing to the Truancy InterventionProgram. Five unexcused absences will result in a truancy referral.Student Responsibility:1. Students are required to attend all of their scheduled classes. Students must also acceptresponsibility for being on time for each class.
