I was reallyimpressed with the change of toolhandles for the Robert Sorby turningtools.Instant GalleryThe instant gallery was so largethat I could only select a few piecesto use in this issue. Those pieces areused on the cover. As I understandit there were over 800 pieces in thegallery. A number of those pieceswere items donated for the auctionon Saturday evening. Thescrew slightly to the side of center isfor inserting and removing the plug.David says that he uses the plugsover and over and had a sack full ofthem. For each hole, he selected aplug to fit it. David began the second demonstrationthat I watched by makinga sphere from a prepared blank. Heused a sphere turning jig to makethe balls round and then sawed offthe long tenons, which he said hewould use to make another sphere.He doesn’t like to waste wood.Figure 15. David Springett’sswinging jig to turn spheres.This was a simple jig thatanyone could make to simplifythe turning of spheres.After making the sphere, Davidselected another sphere with some ofthe holes already done and workedon what would become a 12 pointstar in a sphere. Again, he only didone hole using a disc type plug ashe had for the star in a cube.
