BOARD DISCIPLINE HEARINGSTHE SCHOOL BOARD OF SEMINOLE COUNTYOctober 3, 2011The <strong>Seminole</strong> <strong>County</strong> Public <strong>Schools</strong> Discipline Hearing Officer(s) convened on Monday October3, 2011 for <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> reviewing Administrative Assignment(s) and Expulsionrecommendations to be confirmed by Board action.Ms. Karen Almond, <strong>Seminole</strong> <strong>County</strong> Public <strong>Schools</strong> Board Member, was present to hear <strong>the</strong>Superintendent’s recommendations as Hearing Officer, for <strong>the</strong> full Board. Mr. Gene Grace was inattendance to present <strong>the</strong> Superintendent’s recommendations. Ms. Cheryl Long was present, asclerk, to record recommendations.ALTERNATIVE ASSIGNMENTSStudent(s), numbered 1- 2 that did not request an Alternative Assignment Review were providedto <strong>the</strong> attending Hearing Officer by Mr. Grace.Superintendent’s Recommendation: Mr. Grace presented <strong>the</strong> Superintendent’s recommendationthat <strong>the</strong> Administrative Alternative Assignment(s), as presented, be accepted as a final decisionand not subject to fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>board</strong> action.Recommendation to <strong>the</strong> Board: Concur that <strong>the</strong> Alternative Assignment Agenda, as presented, beapproved and is not subject to fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>board</strong> action.ALTERNATIVE ASSIGNMENT REVIEW AND EXPULSION RECOMMENDATION(S)Ms. Almond asked <strong>the</strong> parents/guardians in attendance for students on <strong>the</strong> discipline hearingagenda if <strong>the</strong>y preferred an open or closed hearing. Parents/Guardians <strong>of</strong> student(s) numbered2, 3 and 7 requested a closed hearing. Parents/Guardians <strong>of</strong> student(s) numbered 4 and 5requested <strong>the</strong> hearing to be open to <strong>the</strong> public. Student numbered 1 did not appear before <strong>the</strong>Hearing Officer. Student numbered 6 was re-scheduled to appear before <strong>the</strong> Hearing Officeron October 12, 2011.EXPULSION RECOMMENDATION OF STUDENT NO. 1 ~ JOURNEYS ACADEMYSuperintendent’s Recommendation: Mr. Grace presented <strong>the</strong> charge(s) submitted by JourneysAcademy and relayed <strong>the</strong> Superintendent’s recommendation that student numbered 1 beexpelled from <strong>Seminole</strong> <strong>County</strong> Public <strong>Schools</strong> through June 2012.Recommendation by Hearing Officer: Concur that student numbered 1 will be expelled from<strong>Seminole</strong> <strong>County</strong> Public <strong>Schools</strong> through June 2012. The parents/guardians did not appearbefore <strong>the</strong> Hearing Officer, or <strong>the</strong> Superintendent’s Designee, and did not contact <strong>the</strong> DisciplineDepartment to re-schedule a Board Discipline Hearing.EXPULSION RECOMMENDATION OF STUDENT NO. 2 ~ JOURNEYS ACADEMYSuperintendent’s Recommendation: Mr. Grace presented <strong>the</strong> charge(s) submitted by JourneysAcademy and relayed <strong>the</strong> Superintendent’s recommendation that student numbered 2 beexpelled from <strong>Seminole</strong> <strong>County</strong> Public <strong>Schools</strong> through June 2012.Recommendation to <strong>the</strong> Board: Modified <strong>the</strong> recommendation that student numbered 2 will beexpelled with <strong>the</strong> benefit <strong>of</strong> services from <strong>Seminole</strong> <strong>County</strong> Public <strong>Schools</strong> through January 2012.Student numbered 2 is to enroll in <strong>Seminole</strong> <strong>County</strong> Public School Virtual School with a minimum<strong>of</strong> 3 classes. Upon successful completion <strong>of</strong> <strong>Seminole</strong> <strong>County</strong> Public School Virtual School,student numbered 2 may transition back to zoned <strong>school</strong>. Upon re-entry to zoned <strong>school</strong>, studentnumbered 2 will be placed on a District Behavior Contract through June 2012.1Page 2
