RU 48619The main finding from this study was ‘that progesterone is notcritical for the final stages of oocyte maturation’ (p. 592).20Furthermore, they observed perivitelline polyspermy in bothunfertilized and fertilized eggs (e.g. an accumulation of spermbetween the zona pellucida and the vitelline membrane of theinner part of the egg). In fertilized eggs perivitelline polyspermy‘increased from 10.7 per cent (control) to 54.9 per cent, 73.6per cent and 83.3 per cent’ at three different RU 486concentrations (p. 218).21Yang and Wu list four other studies on rats and mice which alsoshowed adverse effects from RU 486 on embryo development. In all of them, however, RU 486 was administered by injectionwhilst their own study used oral administration as is the case inwomen.22The cited third case of a woman who received RU 486 butvomited one and a half hours later (and reported seeing pills) istotally inappropriate to prove ‘normal’ development after exposureto RU 486!Chapter Four1Eicosanoid molecules result from the metabolism of arachidonicacid, with several distinct forms of prostaglandin (also spoken ofas prostanoids) being produced from the cyclooxygenasemetabolic pathway, and leukotrienes from the lipoxygenasepathway. The chemical abbreviations for the prostaglandinsdiscussed in this report are as follows: PGE 1(prostaglandin E 1),PGE 2(prostaglandin E 2), PGF 2•(prostaglandin F 2•) and PGI 2(prostacyclin).2‘Off-label’ prescription of drugs, following their licensing for aspecified purpose (which is ‘on-label’ prescription), is entirely atthe discretion of the physician and falls outside the authority ofthe government bureau and pharmaceutical company responsiblefor the drug licence application.3The diverse, and often totally opposite, functions of prostaglandinsare not unique to their interactions with ovarian hormones.130
