Many students in grades 6, 7, and 8 have reading difficulties. Thepurpose of The Reading Teacher’s Sourcebook is to provide middle school reading teachers with an overviewof research-based instructional approaches for teaching struggling readers. We recognize that writing is anessential component of literacy instruction; however, in this sourcebook we focus primarily on reading.Our goal for this sourcebook is that instruction provided by the reading teacher can be integrated into acoordinated, comprehensive, schoolwide approach. The goal of this schoolwide effort is to ensure that allstudents can read and learn from academic text, including content area textbooks and literature, and thatthey will be motivated to engage in reading for many different purposes.To address this goal, the schoolwide approach is designed to meet the needs of all students by providingthem with instruction specifically designed to help them comprehend the complex vocabulary and contentof academic text and to increase their motivation to read.
