Sample Lessons in this BookIn the following sections, sample lesson plans targeting comprehension, vocabulary, word recognition, andfluency will be discussed in detail. The sample lessons are complete and can be implemented as they areor adapted to meet the needs of a particular class. Each plan is intended to be a sample of one lesson in aseries of skill instruction and strategy instruction lessons. For example, one of the lesson plans includedin this section teaches students how to summarize text. This sample lesson is designed to be merely one ofseveral lessons designed to teach students to summarize text independently. For the most part, the sample lesson plans are not designed to be taught in one class period. Studentsmight need several opportunities for guided practice before moving on to independent practice. Then, after students are able to apply what they learn independently, they will need cumulative practicethroughout the year.Your goal is to arm your students with a toolkit of effective skills and strategies that they will eventually beable to apply independently with a variety of texts. The process of teaching new skills or strategies shouldbe cumulative. This is why planning is so important. The sample lessons that follow are designed:• To be implemented directly in the classroom (usually not in a single class period, but over severalclass periods).• To be a model and a guide for designing a series of lessons that teach and give multipleopportunities to practice each particular skill or strategy.Note: The Daily Review component of each sample lesson describes a review of objectives and content thatmay have been covered on the previous day. This is not meant to dictate what should be taught on the daybefore the lesson, but an example of a quick review. Of course, teachers need to review the specific materialthat they taught in the previous lesson and merely use the sample Daily Review as a guide. The Reading Teacher’s Sourcebook 63
