Older legal instruments and court decisions employ patterns of Englishlanguage usage that are in many cases archaic, particularly with respectto hyphenation. In the interest of authenticity, this usage has beenretained in the titles of all materials reviewed and discussed in thisvolume. Similarly, in older laws and rulings, the names of the provinces ofBalochistan and Sindh are written “Baluchistan” and “Sind”—the officialspelling used by the British colonial administration. This spelling too hasbeen retained in the titles reproduced here, although the modern spellingis used throughout the text of the analysis.The process of amending laws in Pakistan is in many cases carried out instages, by means of specific instruments intended to revise a single law,or through general amending or adapting legislation that deals with scoresof legal instruments. The same hold true for repealing laws. As a result, itis sometimes difficult to determine the status of a particular statute.
