Itook a flight back to the United States. I'd received ten thousand dollarsas a bonus from the Jordanians, given to me in cash in Canadiancurrency. I declared it when I entered the United States and evenfilled out a special form, since I intended to stay in New Yorkovernight. But after calling Bella on the phone, I decided not to stay inNew York but to fly straight to Canada that day. I didn't declare that Iwas taking the money with me out of the country. I did, however, presentit upon arrival in Canada.Several days later, and much to my dismay, there was a knock onmy door at my apartment in Ottawa. A man from the Royal CanadianMounted Police escorted a U.S. custon~s officer from the Americanembassy who wanted to ask me a few questions. The RCMP man madeit clear to me that I didn't have to cooperate with the American, but if Iwanted to, this would be appreciated. I could see my cover blowingright in front of my eyes. If this American wrote some report thatended up in the hands of the Mossad just because he needed some verification, and they realized that I'd been to Jordan, my life expectancywould shrivel right there to a matter of weeks. On the other hand, Idecided I had no choice but to cooperate and hope that it wouldn't getback to the Office. In fact, I made a point of explaining to the officialsthat it was imperative they didn't pass this information on. I told themI was a security adviser, that I'd just come back from helping the Jordaniansimprove their security (which was true), and also that I'd trainedthem in the latest techniques in VIP protection (which was also true). The two seemed to accept my story and they explained that, because of my short stay in the States and the fairly large sum ofmoney I'd brought in but apparently, on paper, had not taken out, they were mainly worried that I was involved in drug dealing or some-thing of that nature. I know today they believed me because I neversaw or heard from them again.Ephraim was very disturbed when he heard about this incidentand wanted me to cool it for a while. We had a regular contact withthe Jordanians, and there was no need to overstress the situation. Generally,he thought it was a good time to lay low. As he put it (and eventhough I couldn't see his face over the phone, I could imagine hisangry expression), "Shamir has just instructed the liaison departmentto start a relationship with the KGB. The man actually wants to cooperatewith them. He says it will help bring out the Soviet Jews sincethe contacts with the Romanians are proving fruitless. But we allknow this is something he's wanted to do for a long time.""He doesn't have to look far," I said. "He had a KGB man in hisoffice. All he has to do is have a talk with Levinson. Or was thisLevinson's idea to start with?"But Ephraim didn't appreciate my little joke. "You stay out ofthings," he said. "It is getting much too hot here, and I can't havethings happening all over the place at the same time. I'll need you toreestablish contact with the British and bring them up to date aboutan operation that's taking place in London. But I still don't have allthe information, and I don't want to get one of our people killed.""Who is running it?" I asked."Barda," he said flatly, as if to say that in itself would cause theoperation to crumble. The ex-taxi driver turned spy was a flamboyant,self-serving opportunist. He'd been caught several times with hishand in the proverbial cookie jar, but because of his connections, healways got off with a light reprimand."But there's not much the Mossad can do at the moment withoutgetting nailed," I said, referring to the fact that after our meeting inWashington, the British most likely had all the Mossad's active safehouses under surveillance."They realized that their safe houses were under surveillance. Sothey've cooled things down, and now Barda will run this operationusing two other attack case officers1 from Brussels."1. Attack case officer: A case officer who has the ability to make fast contactwith a target and proceed quickly with recruiting him to work as an agent forthe Mossad. Once the person has been recruited, the attack case officer willtransfer the everyday running of the agent to a regular case officer and start anew recruiting operation elsewhere. At:ack case officers within the Mossadnumber about five men at most, and are usually stationed in Mossad Europeanheadquarters in Brussels.
"So what do want me to do?""Like I said, once I have more information, you'll call yourEnglish friends and pass the information on to them. For the time1being, just do whatever it is you're doing now. Service the Jordanianson a regular basis and wait."II waited for the next several months and enjoyed life. I started asmall T-shirt business, designing and printing shirts for businesses andfor the Ottawa tourist trade. I named it after a combination of thenames of my two daughters, Sharon and Leeorah. It was namedSharlee Creations and it was doing quite well. It wasn't turning a bigprofit, but it gave me something to do that I liked, we were living wellfrom the money coming in from the Jordanians, and all my expenses Iwere covered by Ephraim. All this money was entered into my companyaccount; as far as Bella was concerned, it was money I receivedfor shirt designs or for being a security adviser to Zaire and Sri Lanka. But it wasn't as long as I had hoped it would be before Ephraimwas back, and we were on our way to put another dent in theMossad's Teflon armor.I had made a call several days before to the British embassy inWashington and told them there was some new information theyneeded to know.Ephraim had provided me with a file on Operation Domino, which was supposed to play itself out over a period of a year in England. The plan was for a Mossad team to carry out the assassinationof a Palestinian cartoonist who worked for a Kuwaiti newspaper andthen lay the blame on the PLO, or, as the buzzword went, "Force 17."This operation was to be a long and elaborate one, involving severalelements of the Mossad. As Ephraim and I were going over this operation plan, we had nodoubt that if the British managed to catch the Mossad in the act, itwould damage Anglo-Israeli relations for some time. What made theexposure worth it was that there was no way the Mossad leadershipwould be able to survive such a scandal. This would be the proverbialstraw that would break the camel's back.Ephraim got a room at the Westin Hotel in Ottawa and made mepromise that I would come to see him the moment my meeting withthe British was over.At about noon, the Brit arrived at my apartment building. Ibuzzed him in and went downstairs to meet him. We sat in an area onIthe mezzanine floor outside the pool. I wanted our first talk to be in aplace that I knew and was comfortable in. Later on, we'd move to myapartment or to a hotel room, also at the Westin, that Ephraim hadalready taken under my name.I didn't know the man. He introduced himself and said that hispeople were very thankful for the information that had brought aboutthe passport catch in West Germany. I asked him if they'd done anythingwith the information I'd given them regarding Maxwell and thelarge sums of money he was transferring to the Mossad station in London. The man assured me that although he was not privy to that information,he had no doubt that it was taken care of. He was extremelyanxious to hear what I had to say, or, as he put it, the cause for myalarm. This was slightly too hot a subject to handle in our presentlocation, so I suggested that I drive the two of us to a hotel room I hadsecured for us. I was very surprised at the speed with which he agreedto go with me to the hotel, without taking any precautionary steps.I drove us over in my car, parked in the underground lot, and wentto the front desk to get my key. We got a corner suite, and once wewere there we wasted no time. We ordered coffee and sandwiches, andafter they arrived we got down to business. I handed him the file thatEphraim had brought me. It detailed several aspects of the operationthat was already under way in England. Most of the players were already in place. Probably as a result ofthe information I'd given the British in Washington, they'd managedto follow the bodlim leaving the Israeli embassy and uncover severalsafe houses that they were now keeping under close surveillance. Thatmeant they were aware of most of the station's routine activity. However, several weeks earlier, a bode1 had realized that he was being followedand reported the incident to his station chief, who had a Yaridteam2 come in from Israel and check the security of operations.Mousa, head of European operations, arrived from Brussels to handlethe job. The Israelis realized that several safe houses were undersurveillance and dropped them. They theorized that one of the caseofficers must have been neglectful during his routine testing to verify ifhe was clean and had picked up a tail. Now that the territory wascleaned, they were confident that they could carry on, but to be safethey'd brought in three attack case officers from the Brussels headquarterswho'd be working outside the embassy, meaning that they2.
