266 / VICTOR OSTROVSKYas if I'd said that the Mossad knew Americans were the target, whichwas not the case. This and numerous other headline-making revelations helped propelthe book to the number one spot on the New York Times bestsellerlist, where it stayed for nine weeks. By Way of Deception madethe best-seller list in almost every one of the twenty-odd countrieswhere it was published. It was published in some fifteen different languages(although it's still not available in Hebrew), and by the year'send had sold well over a million copies worldwide.Had it not been for Bella's last-minute intervention, the names ofall the field personnel would have been in the book. I had no problemwith using the names, nor did Ephraim. We both knew that they werealready burned, and by putting their names in, we might be savingthem. But I was equally happy not to put them in.Not that it saved me from being portrayed in the Israeli press asthe devil incarnate. One Israeli reporter said in an editorial that someoneshould put a bullet in my head. Yet another said that I should betied to a pole and all the people of Israel should come and spit on me.Few, if any, Israelis seemed to stop and say, "Maybe what he says hasa grain of truth in it."Because the book had been translated into so many languages, I'dmet and answered questions from people around the world. Gratifyingly,at least as far as my credibility was concerned, as time passed, more and more things that were said in the book were proved to betrue.I'd moved to a bigger house and had started a new career. I wasgoing to write a novel. I knew that writing fiction presented a wholenew set of challenges, but I felt that my experiences provided greatraw material from which a compelling story could be woven. Stoddarthad decided to take a chance on me, and I was grateful.Ephraim and I still spoke fairly frequently. He told me that theIsraeli parliamentary commission investigating the "Ostrovsky affair"had come back with the conclusion that the only problem was that I'dbeen recruited in the first place. As for how things had changed insidethe Mossad, there was barely any change at all. The one minor ripplemy book caused was that several of the so-called moderates wereblamed for recruiting me and kicked out. Also, the fear that an oversight committee might be establishedcaused various preventive measures to be taken. Ties were beingstrengthened with the settler movement in the Territories, and "spies"were being recruited in the Ministry of Defense and the military.THE OTHER SIDE OF DECEPTIOS / 267"I guess you still have a job to do," said Ephraim. "There aresome elements around the new boss today who are far more dangerousthan anyone you ever knew in your time.""I can't do much now, with the kind of exposure I have.""We'll see about that. For the time being, go with the flow. Justmake sure you don't go under."1 took his warning seriously, knowing where it came from.
The year 1991 did not turn out to be a good year for the Mossad, although at first it looked as though it would. There was a new bosson the throne, and to the joy of most of the opportunists, it was aninsider. The Office had successfully managed to prevent the governmentfrom bringing in a general from the outside. And what's more, the Mossad had their man, Yitzhak Shamir, in the seat of power asprime minister. Israel's prime minister was a man who liked to bereminded of his Mossad past (even if within the Mossad it was neverregarded as more than mediocre, with no lasting achievements). This time, the insider had taken the top position in the Mossad ina natural succession, making it clear to all that from that day forththere was to be no more parachuting in of an outsider boss. A newlayer of Teflon had just been added to the organization, which wasalways in the dirt but could not get dirty. The new chief took office and made no changes in the organization,to the appreciation of his comrades-in-arms. What was happening, though, was an erosion of the link that had been maintainedbetween the Mossad and the military by having a former general headup the intelligence agency. Once again, a leader was at th; helm of theMossad who didn't know the military or hold much respect for it. Thenew head regarded the military establishment as prima donna ballerinas,in constant need of nursing and incapable of making tough deci-sions without wearing iron underwear (as he used to put it while stillhead of o~erations during " mv , term in the Mossadi."The only way we could do something of any significance now,"Ephraim said, "would be to target the Mossad one country at a timeand try to make a difference that way.""We've done that already. And what happened?""Look, I know of some activity taking place now in Norway. Whydon't we use that country as a target and see what happens? What dowe have to lose?""Did you ever consider taking over from the inside, now that all, ttempts to hit it from the outside have failed?""I always consider that. If there was a chance of my taking thescepter, trust me, I would. But they have secured it for God knowshow long. As long as Shamir is in office, we don't have a chance to doanything. He hates the whole world, and what better way to get hisrevenge than to use the Mossad? He hates Bush for humiliating him inwashington and holding him by the short hairs regarding the loanguarantees. He hates the British." He paused. "Well, he always hatedthe British. He doesn't trust the French, and we know what he thinksof the Arabs and everybody else.""So what now?""I have a friend in Norway who knows a reporter for a newspapercalled the Oftenposten. I can have my friend suggest that the reportercall you and see if there might be a story there for him regarding theMossad.""Is there a story there?""Sure there is."We pored over the details of this story and found several referencesto it in the Danish documents that I had. All I had to do nowwas wait for a call and take it from there. We'd placed little hope inthis escapade, but it was better than doing nothing. And even though Iwas in the middle of writing my novel, I knew there were more importantthings to be done.I felt that if there was a change in government in Israel, there'd bea chance for some peace negotiations. So I had in some ways changedmy goals. From that point on, it wasn't just the Mossad I was after. Iwas also looking for ways to embarrass the government. For me, 1991_ was going to be a very good year.Within a few days, I received a call from a reporter in Norwaycalling himself Mr. Stangheler. He said he was working for a Norwegianpaper, the Oftenposten, and wanted to ask me a few questions. Then followed the usual niceties; he buttered me up to assure mycooperation, telling me that he enjoyed my book and that he was hopingI would write another, etc., etc. He eventually got to the point. Hewanted to know if I knew of any Mossad activities in Norway.I explained to him that I had no dealings with the Norwegian deskbut that I could offer him a kind of projection from the activities ofthe Mossad in Denmark, which I had detailed quite extensively in theLbook. I also said that there was no doubt in my mind that the Mossad
