and the Shi'ites in Lebanon made him a lot of money over the years. But he'd taken one cut too many. The Mossad had given him several million dollars to pay off someLebanese family who could in turn bring about the release of capturedIsraeli airman, Ron Arad. As a result of Spiro's involvement with theIran-Contra affair, the Lebanese were not willing to deal with himanymore. But he held on to the money. When the Kidon team came tohis house November 7, 1992, to get the money back, something wentwrong, and his wife and three children were killed. He was taken tothe desert, where the team forced him to reveal where he'd stashed themoney, after he first tried to claim he'd given it to the Lebanese. Hewas then fed some poison that he happened to have with him. Thepoison was a substance used to check the purity of gold he'd beeninterested in mining. At that point, I had no doubt that my time was starting to run out.Early in the morning, we all got into a cab and headed back to Holland.Crossing the Dutch border was a great relief, but I knew I wasn'tout of the woods until I was back on Canadian soil. I made one lastcall from the hotel to Uri, but for some reason, I was cut off.During the flight, I finally realized what had happened. I wasgoing to take some steps to verify it, but I was pretty sure I knew. There had been a power struggle in the Mossad for the top job. Bynow, it was safe to say that Ephraim and his clique were probably theonly ranking officers in the Mossad not to have screwed up. Thatbeing the case, Ephraim was more than likely the man to be tapped torun things, unless a new man was brought in from the outside. And, inall likelihood, it would only be a matter of time before he and theclique came gunning for me.I was the weak link and the most vulnerable one. So it seemed thatwhat I had to do was clear. I had to put everything else aside and writethis story for everyone to see.Now it's done, and it's out of my hands. You be the judge.ji-CHRPTER 1"Belgium Probes Terrorist Links with NATO-wide Resistance Group,"Reuters, November 9, 1990.Michael Binyon, "Head of Belgian Detective Force Arrested," Times,April 26, 1990.Raf Casert, "Belgium Orders Investigation into Secret Anti-CommunistGroup," Associated Press, November 9, 1990.Dan Izenberg, "Apparent Blunder: Israel Jets Intercept, Release LibyanPlane," Associated Press, February 4, 1986.Stephan Ketele, "Subs for Aalst Dateline on Sked Alert Issued inSupermarket Massacre," United Press International, November10, 1985.James M.
