The following steps <strong>for</strong>m a comprehensive and shared resp<strong>on</strong>se to the<br />

student who has bullied. Refer to the tracking <strong>for</strong>m later in this secti<strong>on</strong>,<br />

which models a process <strong>for</strong> staff to initiate an incident report and to<br />

note which steps they have completed.<br />

First Resp<strong>on</strong>ders<br />

1. Send students resp<strong>on</strong>sible <strong>for</strong> bullying to a predetermined locati<strong>on</strong><br />

(e.g, edge of playground, office, classroom) and advise them that<br />

there will be follow-up.<br />

� Initiate an incident report and alert an appropriate sec<strong>on</strong>d resp<strong>on</strong>der.<br />

� Gather additi<strong>on</strong>al in<strong>for</strong>mati<strong>on</strong> as required.<br />

2. Identify and apply the appropriate level of interventi<strong>on</strong> and resp<strong>on</strong>d<br />

accordingly. (Details <strong>on</strong> how to identify and apply appropriate<br />

levels of interventi<strong>on</strong> are provided later in this secti<strong>on</strong>.)<br />

� Complete the bullying incident tracking report.<br />

Identifying and Applying Appropriate Levels of Interventi<strong>on</strong><br />

The severity and durati<strong>on</strong> of the bullying behaviour determines the<br />

level of resp<strong>on</strong>se required. The following pages describe a three-level<br />

resp<strong>on</strong>se system, based <strong>on</strong> the work of Gail Ryan at the University of<br />

Colorado. Levels I and II are applied sequentially, while Level III may be<br />

applied following Level II or it may be applied to any bullying situati<strong>on</strong><br />

that is c<strong>on</strong>sidered serious when it first comes to light.<br />
