CHILDHOOD STUDIESThe College of Human and Health Sciences iscommitted to providing a multidisciplinary appro<strong>ac</strong>hto the study of children, childhood and young people.We currently offer two Master’s programmes, the MA inChildhood Studies and the MA in Developmental and TherapeuticPlay. It explores topics from broadhealth, legal, historical, psychological, and sociologicalperspectives. This course will appeal to all students who wish todevelop their careers working with children from birth through toeighteen. The programme covers a broad range of issues andencourages students to critically reflect on their pr<strong>ac</strong>tice,addressing theory and research specific to their own interests.Compulsory modules include:• Child Health• Children’s Rights and Safeguarding Children and Young People• Researching Childhood• Understanding and Observing Child Development.Optional modules include, for example:• International Perspectives on Play and Learning• Therapeutic Work with Children• Thesis.Our graduates frequently enter posts involving child-related work,for example large children's charities, services for children such ashealth, social services, education and community services. Themultidisciplinary nature of the MA in Childhood Studies opens upmany opportunities for graduates includingposts in research, policy development andsenior management.MA Developmental and Therapeutic PlayPlay is integral to a range of children’sservices. This scheme offers an excitingopportunity to study children’s play at anadvanced <strong>ac</strong>ademic level, combiningdemanding intellectual work with fieldworkexperience and sophisticated reflection.The aim of the course is to deepenunderstanding about the developmentaland therapeutic potential of play <strong>ac</strong>ross arange of contexts and to f<strong>ac</strong>ilitate thedevelopment of professional skills that canstrengthen and broaden children'srepertoire of play behaviours. The focus ison ensuring that environments andinter<strong>ac</strong>tions maximise the inherent value ofplay, and on being able to identify whenfurther assistance may be required. Thecourse focuses on children’s growing abilityto play, as well as development throughplay and variation in children’s play. The collectionillustrates more than 4,000 years of human development, from theprehistoric to the early Christian era, and plays an integral role tote<strong>ac</strong>hing and research.Taught CoursesThe Department offers four taught MA schemes:The MA Ancient Egyptian Culture studies the material culture andlanguage of ancient Egypt. Compulsory modules includeUnderstanding Ancient Egyptian Culture, Collecting EgyptianAntiquity, and Egyptian language.The MA Ancient History and Classical Civilisation studies thehistory, culture, and languages of the classical world. Compulsorymodules include Research Methodologies in Ancient History andClassical Culture and either Ancient Greek or Latin. A wide rangeof optional modules is also available.The MA Ancient Narrative Literature is the first of its kind in theworld. It is designed for students who have an interest in thenarrative literature of Greece and Rome (e.g. epic poetry, fiction,historiography). Compulsory modules include Narrative Genresand Theory, and either Ancient Greek or Latin or both. A widerange of optional modules is also available.The MA Classics studies Greek and Latin language, literature,and civilisation. Compulsory modules include Narrative Genresand Theory, and both Ancient Greek and Latin. A wide range ofoptional modules is also available.How the degrees are structuredThe full-time course structure is split <strong>ac</strong>rossthe year with three modules offered in e<strong>ac</strong>h<strong>ac</strong>ademic semester (a total of six modulesin Part One) and then a dissertation overthe summer (Part Two). E<strong>ac</strong>h schemeincludes some compulsory modules, andthe number is made up by choosing from alist of options. The dissertation componentis written on a specialist research topic ofyour choosing.Part-time students normally take threemodules in e<strong>ac</strong>h of their two years(compulsory methodology modules inthe first year) and write their dissertationin the third year.Modules deal with literary texts;documentary evidence; archaeologicalevidence; and the study of sexuality,religion and society.
