You can follow the city’s professional rugby, football,VARSITYThe Welsh Varsity Challenge is the biggest student event in Wales, and is the second largest of the BritishVarsity Games, behind the Oxford/Cambridge game.Varsity sees Swansea and Cardiff universities competing in over20 different sports, from basketball, rowing, golf, and hockey tofencing, squash, and Ultimate Frisbee. The competition culminatesin the showpiece rugby match, which in 2011 Swansea won infront of a crowd of nearly 15,000 at Wales’ MillenniumStadium.Proceeds from the event were donated to the Welsh RugbyCharitable Trust and Sport Relief.and cricket teams, as well as a wide range of amateur sportsteams. And, of course, you can follow the progress of theUniversity’s teams as they compete at home and around the country.Many students have gone on to represent and gain contr<strong>ac</strong>tswith semi-professional and professional clubs on the b<strong>ac</strong>k ofgreat performances in the Welsh Varsity Match. Previous teamsfielded by Swansea University have included Welshinternationals Alun-Wyn Jones, Richie Pugh and Dwayne Peel.To date, Swansea has won ten of the fourteen Varsity rugbymatches, drawing once.157
