From the roles ofconsumption and globalisation in shaping cities in advancedeconomies, to the livelihood and development challenges f<strong>ac</strong>ingcities in the developing world, the programme provides you withan advanced understanding of contemporary issues within UrbanStudies, giving you the skills to conduct theoretically informed andmethodologically rigorous urban research.The programme offers you an exciting opportunity to undertake anadvanced research dissertation, on a topic tailored to yourindividual interests, on any urban theme or issue. As the basis for thisresearch, you take three taught modules, offered by members of theUniversity’s Geography Department, from a list typically including:• Social Theory and Sp<strong>ac</strong>e• Consumer Culture: Modern and Postmodern• Qualitative Research Methods• Quantitative Research Methods.Your choice of modules relates to your choice of dissertationtopic. Students must obtaina total of 180 credits to qualify for the degree. This is made up of 120credits in Part One (the taught element) and a project (Part Two) which isworth 60 credits and culminates in a research project/dissertation.Students must successfully complete Part One before being allowed toprogress to Part Two.MRes programmes consist of 180 credits: 60 credits for taughtcomponents and 120 credits for the research project/dissertation.For full details of the modules available, please visit the website.AssessmentThe award of the MA, MSc and MRes is dependent uponsatisf<strong>ac</strong>tory performance in examinations, continuousassessment and research project/dissertation.
