HISTORY ANDHERITAGEA brief historySwansea University’s coat of armsThe University’s foundation stone waslaid by King George V on 19 July 1920and 89 students (including 8 femalestudents) enrolled that same year. In1921, Dr Mary Williams became thefirst woman to be appointed to a Chairat a UK university when she becameProfessor of French language andliterature. By September 1939, therewere 65 staff and 485 students.By 1960 a large-scale developmentprogramme was underway that wouldsee the construction of new halls ofresidence, the Maths and Science Tower, and College House (later renamed FultonHouse). Work began on the studentvillage at Hendrefoelan in 1971, theSouth Wales Miners’ Library wasestablished in 1973 and the TaliesinArts Centre opened on campus in 1984.In 2003, the University set out objectivesdesigned to secure its long-term future asa research-led institution of internationalcalibre. Technium Digital opened in2005 and, barely two years later, theUniversity opened its Institute of LifeScience, which commercialises the resultsof research undertaken in the School ofMedicine. Work commenced on asecond Institute of Life Science in 2009.Our coat of arms (pictured below, left)was granted by the College of Heraldsin 1921 and remains an elegantrepresentation of our traditions, heritage, and standing.Swansea’s industrial and maritimeheritage is depicted on the shield by thehammer, pickaxe, and anchor. The bookrepresents academia, and the dragonsymbolises Wales. Our motto, Gweddwcrefft heb ei dawn, which can betranslated as Craft is bereft with noinborn gift, is taken from the MyvyrianArchaiology, one of the earliestcollections of medieval Welsh literatureto be printed entirely in Welsh.190In 1947 there were just two permanentbuildings on campus: Singleton Abbeyand the library. The Principal, J S Fulton, recognised the need to expand theestate and had a vision of a selfcontainedcommunity, with residential, social and academic facilities on asingle site. His vision was to becomethe first university campus in the UK.The Regional Schools of Nursingtransferred to Swansea in 1992, andthe School of Medicine opened in 2001,marking a significant increase in Wales’capacity to train doctors and undertakeinnovative research.Swansea University is now enjoying aperiod of sustained research-led growth, and continues to work for the benefit ofthe city, its people and industries.
