and to achieve this by a direct method of invoking thepresence of Īsvara, or Brahman, into our being, summoningĪsvara into our consciousness. Give Īsvara a place in yourheart. Instead of thinking of an object corresponding to aparticular name, think of Īsvara who is designated by acomprehensive Name. All the names of the world likemountain, river, etc. are particular names corresponding toparticular forms. But Īsvara is not a particular form; He is aUniversal Form, and therefore you cannot call Him orsummon Him by a particular name. You have to call Himby a Universal Name, because He is Universal Form. Noparticularised language can describe Īsvara, because Īsvarais not a particularised object. He is not a man or a womanor a human being; He is not here or there; He iseverywhere. That which is everywhere can not bedesignated by a language that belongs only to particularcountry or a man or a woman or a particular person. Yourequire a very comprehensive language to describe thecomprehensive Form of Īsvara. There is no comprehensivelanguage; all languages are local. You have many languages,and there is no single language that can be applied to thewhole world. And even if there be a language that can bevalid for the whole world, even that is a local language fromthe point of view of the vaster cosmos. Is there a languagethat can be valid for the whole universe? That languagealone can describe Īsvara, because He is Universal. There isno such language. The only language conceivable, revealedto the ancient riṣhis, is Om, or Praṇava.The recitation of Om is the speaking of a universallanguage, a language which comprehends within itself all21
