ecause freewill is only as much real as the freedom ofchoice seen in a hypnotised individual. If the physician is tohypnotise a patient, the patient would act according to thewill of the physician, not knowing that he has beenhypnotised, and all the while feeling that he is actingaccording to his own choice or freedom of will. Thepsychoanalysts hold that we seem to have freedom in thesame way, not knowing that we have been hypnotised bythe impulses from within, the complexes of which we aremade. There is no use saying that we are free. The patientalso says that he is free. When he becomes healthy andrecovers his normal consciousness, he may act differently. When he is freed from the clutches of the influence of thephysician’s will, he will act otherwise, altogether. And soalso we will not act in the way we do now if we are freed ofthe psychological complexes in which we are enmeshedthese days, in the situations we are placed in throughoutour lives.Every human being has a complex; not merely onecomplex but several ones. Frustrated feelings becomecomplexes, later on. In the beginning, you have a desire, and all desires cannot be fulfilled because of there beingwhat the psychoanalysts call the ‘reality’ principle. There isthe reality of society, the reality of the world outside, whichopposes your desires. The society has a law of its own, which will not allow the expression of all individual desires. So, the individuals suppress the desires within by repressiveactivity. Repression and suppression are the mechanismsused by the mind to appear harmonious with the reality ofsociety outside by putting on an appearance that is not real.81
