ASSOCIATE IN FINE ARTS<br />
DEGREE PROGRAM<br />
<strong>St</strong>. <strong>Louis</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong> offers an <strong>associate</strong> <strong>in</strong> f<strong>in</strong>e <strong>arts</strong><br />
<strong>degree</strong> with four <strong>degree</strong> options—art education, general f<strong>in</strong>e<br />
<strong>arts</strong>, graphic communications and photography. The <strong>associate</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />
f<strong>in</strong>e <strong>arts</strong> is offered jo<strong>in</strong>tly with the University of Missouri-<strong>St</strong>. <strong>Louis</strong><br />
and is designed for students plann<strong>in</strong>g to transfer to UM-<strong>St</strong>. <strong>Louis</strong><br />
and earn the bachelor of f<strong>in</strong>e <strong>arts</strong> <strong>degree</strong>. Freshman and<br />
sophomore courses take place at Florissant Valley, Forest Park<br />
and Meramec, and junior- and senior-level courses take place on<br />
the UM-<strong>St</strong>. <strong>Louis</strong> campus.<br />
UM-<strong>St</strong>. <strong>Louis</strong> accepts all art courses taken at <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Louis</strong><br />
<strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong> up to a maximum of 66 credit hours.<br />
<strong>St</strong>udents should work with a counselor or advisor to ensure<br />
their courses will transfer. UM-<strong>St</strong>. <strong>Louis</strong> admission counselors are<br />
available at Florissant Valley, Forest Park and Meramec to help<br />
students complete their transfer applications.<br />
Art Education Option<br />
ASSOCIATE IN FINE ARTS DEGREE<br />
Florissant Valley, Forest Park, Meramec and Wildwood<br />
This transfer option is designed to provide students with the<br />
first two years of study towards a professional <strong>degree</strong> <strong>in</strong> art<br />
education. Upon completion of the AFA - Art Education Option,<br />
students can successfully transfer to the University of Missouri-<br />
<strong>St</strong>. <strong>Louis</strong> to earn a bachelor of f<strong>in</strong>e <strong>arts</strong> <strong>degree</strong> <strong>in</strong> art education<br />
or to other four-year art schools or colleges to complete the last<br />
two years toward a professional art education <strong>degree</strong>. <strong>St</strong>udents<br />
are strongly advised to familiarize themselves with the art<br />
education <strong>program</strong> at the school to which they plan to transfer<br />
and work with advisors at <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Louis</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong> to plan<br />
a <strong>program</strong> to meet those requirements.<br />
The AFA - Art Education Option is governed and accredited by<br />
the state of Missouri and meets the mid-preparation benchmarks<br />
of the performance standards established for pre-service teachers <strong>in</strong><br />
the state of Missouri. <strong>St</strong>udents should work <strong>in</strong> consultation with<br />
both art and education advisors and will complete required<br />
courses <strong>in</strong> general education, art and professional education.<br />
Persons <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> this <strong>program</strong> should possess a strong<br />
<strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> the visual <strong>arts</strong> and a desire to teach at the elementary<br />
or secondary level. <strong>St</strong>udents are expected to have college level<br />
read<strong>in</strong>g, oral and written language proficiencies and display clear,<br />
correct, and effective writ<strong>in</strong>g and speak<strong>in</strong>g skills.<br />
<strong>St</strong>udents must achieve a m<strong>in</strong>imum GPA of 2.5. <strong>St</strong>udents<br />
transferr<strong>in</strong>g to UM-<strong>St</strong>. <strong>Louis</strong> with an AFA <strong>in</strong> Art Education must<br />
achieve a m<strong>in</strong>imum score of 235 on each section of the C-BASE<br />
before enroll<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> UM-<strong>St</strong>. <strong>Louis</strong> Level-2 EDU (Education)<br />
courses. It is strongly recommended that students beg<strong>in</strong> test<strong>in</strong>g<br />
for C-BASE competencies early <strong>in</strong> their sophomore year at<br />
STLCC. Some four-year transfer <strong>in</strong>stitutions may have additional<br />
requirements <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g higher GPA or C-BASE scores. <strong>St</strong>udents<br />
are encouraged to work closely with an advisor so that they may<br />
understand and prepare to meet all entrance requirements.<br />
<strong>St</strong>udents who are plann<strong>in</strong>g to transfer to the University of<br />
Missouri-<strong>St</strong>. <strong>Louis</strong> should consult with the advisor to learn of the<br />
articulation agreement before beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g their coursework toward<br />
the STLCC AFA <strong>degree</strong>. The University of Missouri-<br />
<strong>St</strong>. <strong>Louis</strong> offers a Bachelor of F<strong>in</strong>e Arts <strong>degree</strong> <strong>in</strong> Art Education,<br />
with K-12 teacher certification, with emphasis electives <strong>in</strong> pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
draw<strong>in</strong>g, photography or pr<strong>in</strong>tmak<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
