Fire Protection Technology<br />
ASSOCIATE IN APPLIED SCIENCE DEGREE<br />
Forest Park<br />
This <strong>program</strong> is designed to upgrade the skills of persons<br />
currently employed <strong>in</strong> the field. <strong>St</strong>udents receive a thorough<br />
knowledge of effective fire fight<strong>in</strong>g techniques and the ability to<br />
use equipment appropriate to ext<strong>in</strong>guish all types of fires. They<br />
become familiar with <strong>in</strong>spection techniques, municipal safety<br />
codes and ord<strong>in</strong>ances, <strong>in</strong>surance regulations, alarm systems,<br />
hydraulics and structures.<br />
All courses are taught identically on two successive even<strong>in</strong>gs<br />
to accommodate rotat<strong>in</strong>g schedules of work<strong>in</strong>g fire fighters.<br />
Required liberal <strong>arts</strong> courses may be taken day or even<strong>in</strong>g, but<br />
are offered on a rotat<strong>in</strong>g basis <strong>in</strong> the even<strong>in</strong>gs only as listed <strong>in</strong><br />
the long-range schedule available from the department.<br />
Persons <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> this <strong>program</strong> should be mechanically<br />
<strong>in</strong>cl<strong>in</strong>ed and have good coord<strong>in</strong>ation and vision. <strong>St</strong>am<strong>in</strong>a and<br />
agility are also important. Fire fighters should have a will<strong>in</strong>gness<br />
to serve the public, be capable of exert<strong>in</strong>g maximum effort<br />
under discourag<strong>in</strong>g conditions, be persistent and tenacious, be<br />
able to work <strong>in</strong> a team; and to improvise <strong>in</strong> problem solv<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

This <strong>program</strong> is <strong>in</strong> the process of be<strong>in</strong>g deactivated. New<br />
students are no longer be<strong>in</strong>g accepted. <strong>St</strong>udents currently<br />
enrolled <strong>in</strong> this <strong>program</strong> should see the department chair or an<br />
advisor.<br />
Funeral Direct<strong>in</strong>g<br />
CERTIFICATE OF PROFICIENCY<br />
Forest Park<br />
This <strong>program</strong> prepares the student for licensure as a funeral<br />
director and entry-level employment <strong>in</strong> a Missouri funeral<br />
establishment, as well as other states with similar licens<strong>in</strong>g<br />
regulations. Funeral Direct<strong>in</strong>g courses are available to students<br />
who have been admitted to the Funeral Direct<strong>in</strong>g Program<br />
and/or have departmental approval. The Funeral Direct<strong>in</strong>g<br />
curriculum consists of two semesters of courses that are offered<br />
<strong>in</strong> the even<strong>in</strong>g at the Forest Park campus as well as Distance<br />
Learn<strong>in</strong>g via the <strong>College</strong>’s Internet Web site. The Certificate<br />
focuses solely on funeral direct<strong>in</strong>g, with no courses <strong>in</strong> embalm<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
It is a nontechnical certificate, geared toward the bus<strong>in</strong>ess and<br />
public relations aspects of operat<strong>in</strong>g a funeral home.<br />
Funeral directors use counsel<strong>in</strong>g skills to assist families <strong>in</strong><br />
cop<strong>in</strong>g with grief, adjust<strong>in</strong>g to new situations, and mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />
appropriate funeral arrangements. The successful funeral director<br />
possesses emotional stability, the desire to serve others, and<br />
good physical health to withstand the irregular work<strong>in</strong>g hours<br />
and the obvious stresses of the job. Good groom<strong>in</strong>g habits are<br />
essential, as the funeral director must reflect the high standards<br />
of care the families will receive at the funeral home. Prior<br />
coursework <strong>in</strong> public speak<strong>in</strong>g, account<strong>in</strong>g, and bus<strong>in</strong>ess would<br />
be helpful for students <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> this <strong>program</strong>.<br />
This academic <strong>program</strong> is designed to meet specific state or<br />
professional needs. It is not accredited by the American Board of<br />
Funeral Service Education. <strong>St</strong>udents graduat<strong>in</strong>g from this<br />
<strong>program</strong> are not eligible to take the National Board Exam<strong>in</strong>ation<br />
or any state board exam<strong>in</strong>ation for which graduation from an<br />
ABFSE accredited <strong>program</strong> is required.
