5) Fire Department UpdateThere will be two new features added to this year’s Fire Department Open House which will be held onWednesday, October 12 from 5:30pm to 7pm at Fire Station #2. The Yankton Fire Department hadbeen chosen to receive a piece of steel from the World Trade Center. The artifact will be on displayduring the open house. Future plans are to construct a memorial with this artifact as a centerpiece to bedisplayed at Fire Station #2.The second new addition will be the premier of a new fire safety trailer. The previous fire safety trailerwas owned by the volunteers of the Yankton and Vermillion Fire Departments. This summer’s hailstorm totaled out the previous trailer. A well maintained used trailer with the same type of floor planwas located and purchased by the same entities to replace this trailer. The trailer will be delivered priorto Fire Prevention Week.Dry conditions and harvesting activities have kept the Fire Department busy with vegetation fires overthe past several days. The public is reminded to always be careful with open burning and follow allregulations that exist for this purpose. They should check weather condition and refrain from burningwhen weather conditions during and after the burn would not be conducive to this activity.6) Human Resources UpdateThe Employee Committee will be recognizing three more individuals who are participating in theFitness Club for reaching 200 hours. Beth Parr, Accounting Clerk; Laurie Lockwood, ComputerOperator; and Todd Larson, Parks & Recreation Director, have received their “200 hour member” t-shirts.HR Coordinator Sue Berke-Hanson participated in Mt. Marty College’s Career Day program onThursday, Oct. 6. Students attending Career Day were high school juniors and seniors along with Mt.Marty students who were interested in learning more about career fields. This event was coordinatedthrough the Admissions Office at Mt. Marty.7) Environmental Services UpdateBiosolidsThe wastewater treatment plant has been busy sampling for the biosolids application. The biosolids willbe applied to agricultural land as fertilizer. Staff samples the biosolids in the lagoons to estimate thefertilizer content. Then staff samples the soils to determine the background soil conditions. Thesevalues are then used to determine an agronomic rate to apply the biosolids. The sampling has beencompleted and the biosolids application will begin as soon as we receive the results. Final samples willbe collect during the application process for metals.Hydrant FlushingThe distribution staff will begin the bi-annual fall hydrant flushing. Hydrant flushing will take placebetween 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. starting October 11 th .The primary purpose is to verify the proper operation of the fire hydrants through periodic inspectionand preventive maintenance. Secondarily, the program is the key to mitigating water-quality problemsby removing accumulated mineral deposits and sediment from the water mains.Fire hydrant flushing might temporarily reduce water pressure and discolor water. Flushing stirs upsediment, iron and manganese mineral deposits.3
