F INANCIAL A NALYSIS AND P ROGRAM E VALUATION S ECTION 4Student participation in the school meals program may vary depending on variables such as:• percent of paid, free, and reduced price meals served• rural or urban location• age or grade level of participants• closed or open campus• school or district regulations• competition from other foodservices (i.e., fast food restaurants)• weather conditionsSuch differences must be taken into account when comparing participation rates between schools/districts in order toobtain an accurate picture. Average meal participation per day can be calculated by dividing the number of meals servedduring the month by the operating days in the month. Typically, participation is determined separately for breakfast and forlunch.
