EASY FOR BLACK CAVIAR
17th straight win in australia stakes
Black Caviar ANZ
All the best athletes have one
thing in common, writes Darryl
Sherer. They make things look
easy. Last night at Moonee
Valley, Black Caviar (Bel Esprit) duly
recorded her 17th win in the $200,000
Australia Stakes (Gr 2) over 1200m under
lights at Moonee Valley and the five-year-
old mare was barely out of second gear
Settled in third place soon after the
start, Black Caviar was eased out by Luke
Nolen passing the 600m mark to roll up
three wide before the home turn and the
huge crowd roared their appreciation.
Ridden along to go clear into the straight,
Black Caviar was untroubled to ease down
near the finish to defeat a game Zedi Knight
(Zeditave) by four and a quarter lengths,
to DAR3791 win. ANZ Cover strip New Approach 28 JAN12 26/01/2012 12:43 Page Continued 1 on page 2
Rock Classic (Fastnet Rock) for third place.
The time for the 1200m was 1:09.44, which is just 0.15 outside
Miss Andretti’s (Ihtiram) course record.
The Black Caviar phenomenon has now been taken to a whole
new level and Luke Nolen trotted the mare down to the bottom of
the straight so her adoring fans could applaud her back and they
did so with real gusto. No official crowd number had been declared
at the time of writing, but considering the club had run out of race
books before the first race, run out of plastic drinking cups by race
five and allegedly had to throw open the gates at the Puckle Street
entrance after race two because the queue was still at least 800m
long and the crowd was getting restless.
Fortunately the reason for the crush was a horse and what
a horse she is. No matter that she was virtually unbackable at
$1.05, the crowd came to see her strut her stuff and a delighted
trainer Peter Moody was a happy man afterwards.
“It was great to see her back. Her attitude was good, her action
was terrific so hopefully it is the start of a wonderful six months.
“They ran 1.9-something. It was easy to say she was unextended
but how much faster do they go,” the trainer mused before repeating,
“It was wonderful to see her back in great shape.”
Moody said Black Caviar’s immediate program would remain
unchanged with the C F Orr and Futurity Stakes, both Group 1
weight-for-age races over 1400m at Caulfield next month.
“We’ll use the old adage of [AFL coach] Kevin Sheedy, and take
it one game at a time,” Moody said. “There’s a race for her every
Saturday on the eastern seaboard of Australia and other parts of
the world for next six months.”
Nolen said Black Caviar was always relaxed throughout the race,
“Obviously combined with her awesome talent, her giant stride and
her relaxed attitude are the reasons she is such a champion. I’m
not going to say she’s better than she was but she’s physically
Moody was on the midnight flight from Tullamarine to Auckland
marveled at the crowd and the atmosphere. “She’s terrific for our
sport. Melbourne is probably the greatest sporting city in the world
tremendous; it’s just great for our industry. We need it. Racing often
it was very, very heavy but safe.” Birch
The keeper of the Australian Stud Book, Michael Ford, has
reported on thoroughbred mating figures for the 2011
season with the key statistic that they are significantly
lower than those for the 2010 season. To date, 21,550
mares have been reported as being mated for the covering season,
which officially commenced on 1 September 2011.
In 2010, 24,140 mares were mated, while in 2009, 24,610
mares were covered. While the 2011 matings are currently 10% less
than the 2010 figures, Ford expected the difference to be 7% after
late reports are lodged for a total of 22,500 mares to be covered by
700 stallions.
The indications are that the breeding industry will not return to the
pre-global financial crisis days when over 26,000 mares were mated
year after year but Ford does not see this as detrimental.
‘There are sufficient coverings to produce enough foals for racing
purposes,’ Ford stated.
45 shuttle stallions covered 4,356 mares, or 20% of the 21,400
reported matings compared with 4,566 (20%) in 2010 and 4,238
(17%) in 2009;
Only one stallion, Fastnet Rock (Danehill) with 224 mares and
standing at Coolmore, covered more than 200 mares. In 2008, six
stallions covered more than 200 mares so what was perceived as a
worrying trend then has now diminished.
There were 66 stallions with more than 100 matings in 2011
compared with 77 in 2010; 442 or 68% were Australian-bred stallions,
the same percentage as in 1990 when 2,500 stallions covered
35,500 mares. USA –suffixed stallions are favoured next at 16%;
17 of the top covering 20 stallions were Australian bred, continuing
the vote of confidence in the local product.
47% of mares were covered in NSW (up 2%), 24% in Victoria
(up 1%), 15% in Queensland, 10% in Western Australia, 3% in South
Living as we do in what is being termed the ‘Social Media’
age, the way generations communicate is now more diverse
than ever.
Like everything there are pros and cons and, as the
title of this weeks missive would suggest, I’m concerning myself with
Twitter. The social phenomenon has certainly made its mark and, for
many people, is becoming their primary means of communication,
which is fine, each to their own, live and let live.
My use of Twitter is purely as a news gathering tool in a time
where more and more unique news is being usurped by homogenised,
one-size-fits-all feeds from news services at the expense of individual
journalists. This is not confined to racing, it is happening to newspapers
around the world at a frightening rate.
Only on Thursday we saw what I call the
good side of Twitter with Troy Corstens of
Malua Racing using the medium to announce
the sale of a 50% stake in the VRC Oaks (Gr
1, 2500m) winner Mosheen (Fastnet Rock),
quick and simple, name, rank, serial number,
information that we wanted and that was that.
Anne-Marie O’Brien is another who is extremely
proficient on Twitter, sometimes ‘tweeting’ from
the paddock while a Ballydoyle horse is being
unsaddled.
Fantastic and, in a world that is becoming
more and more condensed, any new avenue of
accessing news is a good thing.
There are many within racing using Twitter
for similar reasons however, there is a darker
side to Twitter, a more unpleasant use that increasingly more people
seem to be resorting to.
In recent weeks there have been users engaging in what I would
call unwise use of the medium. A racing administrator calling a jockey
‘inarticulate and ineffective’, praising betting on betting exchanges
and questioning the merits of a 47-time Group winning trainer
because a horse has gone to another trainer and improved, members
of the media engaging in tit-for-tat exchanges that have more of an
edge to them than just witty banter of a jocular nature that most take
as a bit of fun and give as good as they receive.
Fortunately the slur on the Melbourne Cup winning trainer was
made public on Radio Sport National by Alf Matthews and the outrage
at the message saw the ‘tweeter’ quickly issue an apology on Twitter.
However the trainer concerned is yet to have a face-to-face apology.
Saturday 28 January 2012 ANZ
By Darryl Sherer
Social media is one thing, common courtesy and decency seemingly
non-existent in the brave new world of communication.
Like the blog sites that hide behind anonymity and cowardly attack
any individual they fancy without having the backbone to put a name
to their bigoted views, increasingly Twitter is being used by people
looking to impose their own, often narrow-minded, point of views on
others or simply as an avenue to be rude and abusive then the whole
concept of free speech takes on a whole new perspective.
This darker, more sinister side of things is on the increase. For
me personally, I have never issued a personal tweet (and have no
intention to), and do not converse with anyone via Twitter, so I do not
really get involved, other than use it as the occasional news resource.
That does not make me weird; I am one of
many that do the same.
I have friends and colleagues that do use
Twitter. A lot. And more and more I am being
shown threads of ‘Tweets’ on racing and
breeding issues that are increasingly more
abusive, increasingly more virulent. In several
cases statements have been made in public
that are simply slanderous and defamatory.
It can only be a matter of time before a
legal case is commenced over comments
aired in public using social media, whether it be
Twitter, Facebook, a personal blog or website.
The defence of ‘it was only a bit of fun’ or that
well worn ‘I was taken out of context’ will need
to be more than watertight.
There would appear to still be a
misconception that if it’s on the internet then it’s different and the
normal laws of the land that apply to traditional media do not count.
But, for all you out there that hide behind a hash tag and dish the
dirt, beware, because the laws of the land do apply. So grow up and
use the resource properly and if you have a problem with someone,
try an old fashioned method that used to be quite in vogue. Talk to
them face to face.
The magic of the Australian-bred Igugu (Galileo) is set
to be on display once again when the Mike de Kock-
trained mare runs in the pinnacle of the Cape’s Sizzling
Summer Season, the R2.5m J & B Met (Gr 1, 2000m) at
Kenilworth on Saturday, writes Liesl King of Thoroughbred News.
The four-year-old by one of the world’s best sires Galileo
(Sadler’s Wells) will start as one of the shortest-priced favourites
for the J & B Met in years with the feeling being that the rest of the
field may be running for the minor races, albeit that they are also
valuable with stakes paid down to tenth place.
Igugu’s preparation has not been without difficulty for de Kock.
The mare has not run since 4 December when she won the Ipe
Tombi Challenge Stakes (Gr 2) over 1600m at Turffontein. Although
she won that race in facile fashion by five and a quarter lengths she
then picked up a respiratory infection and missed a week of work.
However, over the infection and safely down in Cape Town after
the long float trip from Johannesburg, de Kock is pleased with
her condition. “She travelled well, obviously she has a respiratory
infection about three or four weeks ago, so it has not been plan
sailing, but clinically she is perfect,” he said. “The trip has been
good. They spent about 18 hours on the float down, but it is
something she has done before.”
Igugu is stabled in the Kenilworth Quarantine Station situated
in the middle of the course due to an outbreak of African Horse
Sickness within regulation range of 30km from de Kock’s
Randjesfontein training stables.
This is not ideal from a practical aspect for the stable as all
horses in the station are locked into their stables two hours before
night fall and are not allowed out until two hours after sunrise as
the culicoides midge that transports African Horse Sickness is a
nocturnal insect.
Inside the stables all incoming air is controlled to kill parasites
and insects with sufficient pressure to ensure when the doors are
opened that the controlled air pushes out preventing incoming
unwanted live insects under vector protected conditions.
The stable can only have access to Igugu and her stablemates
from Johannesburg when the regulations permit, however they are
allowed to work on the Kenilworth track itself.
The Magic of Igugu
De Kock worries about the valuable Igugu left for longer periods
than he would like: “She is an uptight filly as Galileo’s can be. She
Igugu GOLD CIRCLE IMAGES
gets very sweaty and that is not ideal, but she is that way inclined
so she is not acting out of the ordinary,” he went on.
A lack of a natural pacemaker in the race, apart from Igugu
herself, holds no fears for de Kock, “I think that suits us and she
can take the pace up and be right on it.”
Igugu’s race performance makes it easy to understand de
Kock’s confidence in the ability of the mare to race wherever she
wants. As a three-year-old, after being the first filly to win the South
African Triple Crown, she took on the older horses in the Durban
July (Gr 1) over 2200m at Greyville under similar weight conditions
to The J & B Met.
Carrying 55kg that day under stable jockey Anthony Delpech
the mare raced against the older horses and dominated from start
to finish. After racing just behind the leaders, Delpech sent her
forward with 400m to run and she took the lead and sustained the
run all the way to the line for a length victory.
On Saturday Igugu has 57kg with an ideal barrier seven for
Delpech to send her forward for a similar performance. Bred by Kia-
Ora Stud and owned by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum
the mare has raced 11 times for nine wins and two places, with
stakes to-date of R4.2m.
“I firmly believe she is world class and I would love to have her
in Dubai for this carnival. I just think she is going to get better and
she is ideal for Saturday,” summed up de Kock after Igugu’s work
on Thursday at Kenilworth.
6 INTERNATIONAL SALES NEwS
The average and aggregate increased slightly on last
year’s figures on the opening day of the Cape Premier
Yearling Sale, with nine lots fetching seven figure
prices. The session topper was Lot 60, a Trippi colt,
who was sold to Form Bloodstock for R1,700,000, not quite
reaching the heights of last year’s top lot, who fetched R2.3million.
Consigned by Highlands Stud, as agent, the colt is out of the
winner Destination Mars (Coronado’s Quest) and is likely to go
into training with Mike de Kock.
Many International faces were present, with Tom Goff of
Blandford Bloodstock paying R800,000 for a Silvano filly, Anthony
Stroud going to R500,000 for a Captain Al colt and Peter Doyle
and Tina Rau signing for two lots each.
The Australian-bred Musir (Redoute’s Choice) could not
have been more impressive when winning the Al Rashidiya
evening, in front of a large crowd, which included His
Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President
and Prime Minster of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
Jockey Christophe Soumillon oozed confidence throughout on the
Mike de Kock-trained five-year-old son of Redoute’s Choice, who was
following up an equally impressive win in the Al Maktoum Challenge
Round I (Gr 3, 1600m all-weather) on his previous start.
Having his first turf start in Dubai, de Kock’s charge was carrying
a penalty having won a valuable turf prize in Turkey last year and
looks a horse for the others to fear throughout the 2012 Dubai World
Cup Carnival.
Sir Percy broke his maiden on the first time of asking at
Goodwood over six furlongs. He then went on to land a
conditions race at Salisbury, again over six furlongs.
His Group race debut was in the Vintage Stakes (Gr
2, 7f) at Glorious Goodwood, which he won in a close finish. He
finished his juvenile season with a win in one of Europe’s best twoyear-old
races - the Dewhurst Stakes (Gr 1, 7f).
The first race of his three-year-old season was the 2,000
Guineas (Gr 1, 1m), where he finished second behind the ill-fated
George Washington (Danehill). His next start was in the second leg
New Zealand jockey Opie Bosson did not let his chance
to return to the winner’s enclosure slip by when he
booted home hotpot Californian Star (California Dane)
in Race 1 on Friday, writes Michael Lee.
Sponsored by two stables namely trainers Mark Walker
and Bruce Marsh, the leading hoop got off to a promising start on
New Year’s Day with a riding double aboard Flying Fulton (Flying
Spur) and Red Beard (Zenno Rob Roy). While many thought he
would be unstoppable, the wins have since dried up to the point
he still had only those two wins on board going into Friday’s night
meeting.
With the Marsh-trained Californian Star, a smart debut second
to the impressive Speedy Cat (Scardee Cat), as his first booking,
Bosson knew he could not afford to let this one get away if he
wanted to keep up a healthy strike rate.
Backed down to $6 favourite on the strength of his debut
race on 8 January when he tried to make all in a 1100m race,
but was left without an answer when the well-named Speedy Cat
came strolling by, Californian Star was considered a moral to go
one better, especially given the lack of depth in the $65,000
Restricted Maiden (2&3YO) race over 1000m.
The race did go to script from the word go with Californian Star
easily taking up the running to dictate his terms before swinging
for home as the one to run down. Mighty Creation (Untouchable)
did send a shiver down a few spines when he loomed up as a
threat at the 200m, but Californian Star eased over the line an
easy one and three quarter length winner.
Mighty Creation had to settle for second place with the third
Bold Bid (Danerich) more than three lengths away. The winning
time was 59.52secs.
Marsh said Californian Star was a lovely sprinter type who
would have disappointed had he got beaten on Friday.
“After his second to Speedy Cat, you wouldn’t think he would
get beaten today. He’s a horse who has shown a lot from the
start.
Bosson Strikes Twice
Saturday 28 January 2012 ANZ
“He’s a very laid-back type of horse. Oscar [Chavez] who rode
him in his work told me he tends to wait for the opposition before
he takes off again.
“He’s not fully matured yet and hopefully that first win will
boost his confidence. I may look for a Novice race next for him
and I hope Speedy Cat wins his next race as he wouldn’t be
eligible anymore then!”
Californian Star cost A$29,000 at the Inglis Classic Yearling
Sale when selling to Paul Willetts Bloodstock and is raced by
